It started like any weekday ride for me last Tuesday. It was 05:10 AM as I left the house on my commute aboard my BMW F800ST. Getting to Highway 101 is a matter of 2 blocks in our rural community above Sutton Lake just North of Florence, Oregon. Then a 1/2 mile leading into a nice long "S" curve. I had exited the first turn in 5th gear, set up for the final turn and eased the bike into 6th. As I straightened out of the second turn I rolled on the throttle and had just adjusted the balls of my feet on the pegs when into my headlight beam came a DEER! I grabbed the clutch and brake levers and stood on the back brake but realized I was going to collide with the deer. I shut my eyes as I struck him and felt myself rise up and away from the bike. I landed on my backpack and helmet, slid to a stop and rolled on to my stomach in order to gather my knees up under my body. I rose to my feet...I was shaking but nothing seemed broke. The wind was knocked out of me and it felt like a horse had kicked me in the back. I walked back to my bike, about 12 steps, set it upright and pushed it to the side of the road. Most of my fairings and front fender were tore to shreds, as I had lost my headlight and both turn signals. Amazingly, it started and I wobbled it home.
The BMW store has it today, says it'll be 5 to 6 weeks at least for repairs.
Other than some bruising, I'm extremely lucky to come out of it with little injury. I owe my life to my overstuffed backpack, my helmet and armored jacket, my gloves heavy jeans and boots, and a little divine intervention. There is no describing the feeling I experienced the moment I realized I was going to hit that animal going that fast in the dark on my bike...damn!

Eeeek!
Glad to hear you're ok. Sounds like your bike didn't fair as well. But, it least that only takes money to make right.
Search motorcycle vs.deer on Youtube and you'll find all sorts of wildlife encounters.
Happens in the blink of an eye too (as you know):

I hit one (deer) in 1975 on a twisty road going to work (breakfast cook) on my dad's XL350. No helmet, no gloves, short sleeves, tennis shoes....I woke up smelling blood and feeling it trickle down into my eye and realized I was in a sand trap on the golf course I was riding next to having gone through a chain link fence. Ended-up in a coma for about a week and nearly tore a kidney off its artery but the loose screws in my head got readjusted a little and I've had a better personality ever since:)
Glad you're OK f800strider! Bikes can be fixed or replaced.

I've purchased a replacement as they totaled my bike. Damn
I'm in Oregon, the new bike is in California.....they should be shipping it this week. I bought a Two Brothers exhaust, Pazzo controls, custom footpegs, and some carbon fiber wrap to make it a little less ordinary. I feel better....wifey is hate'n me for now, but she'll get over it.
