2009 yz450f, oil change / maintenance.. First bike ;]

Got my 2009 yz450f the other day is really good condition. I took it out riding today and was amazing and quite fast. I'm probably going to take it back out tomorrow with a couple of my buddies. I was just wondering how often I should be changing the oil / oil filter and how about the air filter? And how exactly is the best way to clean an air filter (I guess I could find a YouTube video or something)

I didn't wash the bike today since I plan on going back out tomorrow morning, but if you guys think I should clean out the air filter or something let me know. The guy I bought it from got it maintenanced, new oil / oil filter and cleaned the filter. I just want to keep my bike really clean and maintenance it very well so I have it for a long time.

Overall I love the bike, it's amazing and fast... I couldn't even get the bike 5th pinned it was too fast.

Any comments / advice are more than welcome.

I change oil and clean the air filter AT LEAST ever 3 rides, or days of riding. If it's real dusty I'll check, the air filter and clean if needed every ride.

P.S. if you use cheap oil (Rotella, Pensoil, etc.) change it every ride, if you use Belray, Amsoil, or some other good quality thumper oil, go the three or so rides.

buy LOTS of oil, with only a quart of oil in the whole engine it requires often changes. You will get tons of "oil brands" do a bit of research and find one that works for you. My suggestion is drop the oil after every Decent ride. changing the oil filter every 3rd ride. As far as the air filter buy a second one and toss a clean one on every oil change. i used to use dawn dish soap to wash it out with and PJ1 red tack spray to oil it with. now most of the group has gone to NOTOIL filters. pretty amazing stuff.

Dont want to be rude, but there is this thing called a search bar. There are enough threads like this to keep you reading for months. Anyways, change it every 5 hrs and oil filter every other oil change. Clean air filter after every ride.

well as far as what brand to use on oil you will get 100's of opinions. I use rotella 15w 40 from walmart. its cheap as shit and i've never had a problem with it.

I like the Belray 20w50 Thumper oil, I get it real cheap, and it does a great job, for me. I don't care for the stainless, reuseable filters either, I figure 7 bucks for a new, clean filter is cheap enough, vs getting a missed metal shaving or dirt in the engine.

As far as the air filter goes, if you ride in an area where there is little or no dust, then you can clean the air filter every other ride. Being that you are in Nevada, I doubt this is the case, so every ride is much wiser. I recommend you buy a second filter to facilitate having one ready when you want it. I dislike NoToil oils because they will not stay tacky more than a few days, and the important thing to understand about your air filter is that it is the oil that does the filtering. The foam is just something to put the oil on.

I do use the stainless steel reusable filters, and if fact, I use only those from Scotts, not the cheap knock-off copies that have sprung up. With the Scotts, there's no for not having a clean filter each oil change. When you leave "paper" filters in until each second oil change, you leave 10% of the dirty oil in the engine, and run the risk that something the filter has trapped will pass on through it into your engine. Once the mesh filter stops something, it will never come free of the filter until you wash it out.
