I'm wondering about that. The market doesn't seem to be able to do a whole lot with a YZ pipe. The stock setup sets a pretty high bar.
But the more I monkey with my YZs the more I realize the amount of fake "hit" that has been tuned in to the bike. Seemingly for the sake of the magazines. They would pan any two stroke that didn't have it back in the day. The "hit" a YZ has isn't a bust of power. It is a strong recovery from a tuned in lag. A lag that can be tuned out.
Imagine the reaction of these same magazines to a four stroke that had "hit". Such a rig would be the butt of many journalistic jokes.
It would interesting to see a sort of de-hit kit come from the aftermarket. A box with some parts and some detailed instructions for an owner to quickly remove the tuned in lag that produces the fake "hit". I would imagine if a company like DRD would create a pipe to work in concert with these simple modifications. A rider could really transform a more or less stock YZ into something very different in one step.
Looking through these threads you see nearly every day some rider considering this or that mod to tune their bike. Other riders will try to sell them on it because it works. Others remain skeptical. Usually the skeptics have never tested the mod.
Remember when the
SST pipe came out as a system that required the purchase of both the pipe and the silencer? People knee jerked into buying it because it was different and costly so it HAD to be good. WRONG!
For about the same sort of cost, adjusted for inflation. Some company could put together a comprehensive kit that really would transform your bike in a positive way.
