My '03 WR450 came with a full Ti Akrapovic exhaust system, bike seems to run great (done 100 miles country lane blast the other day and all was fine), but whenever i let off the throttle it pops and bangs like a bitch. It sounds great, but is that normal?

Oooops, posted this in YZ instead of WR...

Thats pretty much what you would expect with a free flowing system. Just make sure you have no leaks around the header though......

Thats good to hear, everything appears to all be sealed up nicely, just thought maybe it might do some damage to the exhaust packing (if there is any) or might mean the bike is running too rich. The system has been on since '03 and the bike runs fine so guesing all is ok.

Sometimes the popping can be exaggerated by a lean pilot. Sounds like you have no issues there, but it would do no harm to set the idle circuit to spec. Lots of threads/stickies on how to. :smirk:

Don't know exactly what system you have.....but there should be some packing in there. If the system has been on since '03 i'd say it is overdue for a repack.

What you have going is a lean pop. Check for air leaks in your intake tract. Has it popped since '03? or just started? When was last time you had valves adjusted?

The previous owner said its always been like it (he had it from new and the system was put on right away). Not sure when the valves were last checked/adjusted.

Popping on decel is normal. With a stock pipe, it is a lot less perceptable. Put an Akro or other 'open' system on and you will only hear it then 'cause it is louder. Richening the idle circuit can mask this somewhat, but only at the expense of the bike running worse.

Cool, well it seems to run fine and has done since it was fitted apparently.

"Some" decel popping is normal, and is actually an indication that the pilot circuit is about right. "Excessive" popping is abnormal, and is either a leaky exhaust system, or a pilot set up too lean.

You're running lean

Like Grayracer said "some popping" on deceleration is normal. Now if it sounds like a 45 being fired you have an air leak in the exhaust or a lean condition.
