Wiring key ignition, help?

Recommended Posts

I have a key ignition switch that i'm tring to wire to my '03 WR450....

Wires on original push button ignition are:

RED

RED/BLACK

BLACK

BROWN

Wires on the new ignition switch are:

RED

BLACK

BLACK/WHITE

GREEN

I did try matching the RED + BLACK of the key switch to where the RED + BLACK of the push button were on the bike but promtly blew a fuse ?

Am obviously rubbish at wiring so does anyone have a clue?

There is probably someone who has the answer off the top of their head but you could.....test each wire with a multimeter. See what each one does in association with the other, ie continuity, nomally open, nomally closed etc. Match the 2 switches....bingo!

Thanks but thats the problem, i'm useless with electrics, i do have a multimeter somewhere but have no idea how to use it??!! ?

I have the original ignition button, the new ket switch and a multimeter in front of me but for the life of me cant figure out what i'm doing! lol I'm an engineer not an electrician!

Ok crash course.....

1. Pen & paper

Set the multi-meter to resistance. (Ohms)

Now start with one wire. This will be your common. Test it with the remaining 3 wires & write down the result.

Repeat this with the other 3.

Do the same for the new switch. It will be immediately apparent when you see it in front of you.

Red is the permanent 12V source from the battery (i.e. unswitched)

Black is obviously GROUND

Brown is the switched 12V power source (when the ignition switch is on, power will be on here)

Red/Black is not really important. It's just a wire than runs from the ignition unit and turns on the bright LED light on the original switch!!!

Sit alone with your multimeter and check how the new ignition switch is configured. Turn your multimeter to "continuity mode" (usually when the 2 cables from the multimeter touch each other, you'll here a beep sound from the unit meaning they're connected with each other!). Now, switch the ign.switch to off, attach the 2 mulimeter cables to any pair of the 4 wires, then switch the switch on. Should it beep, then that's all. My guess would be to first check either the pair RED and BLACK/WHITE or RED and GREEN...

Let us know how it goes ?

Open up the original switch housing (two screws)...and look at where the wires go, two go to the LED, two go to the switch. I dont remember the colors, but that is what i did when i wired my Key.

as for the key itself, you have to check the continuity. there will be two wires that are open when the key is off, and closed when on....vice-versa for the other two.

you want the normally open (when off) ones to use as your switch wiring. the other two coming off the key switch are worthless....they are for bikes that have a different type of system. (TTR)
