Buyer Beware Used CRF

As some of you know I bought the Off-Road.com Project CRF450. Since I bought it I have ridden it only a couple of hours and instead have been riding my other CRF which is much better dialed in for me. The top end on the project crf bike had been a little noisy so today I tore into it to see what the problem was. To my horror when I got inside I found the following: The cam was worn, and the lifter buckets were badly worn as well. I decided to continue my quest, off went the head and cylinder and what did I find but a well worn piston. It gets worse.... when I removed the piston I found bad scoring on the wrist pin and rod, and of course the lower end of the rod was bad as well.

Needless to say I am really pissed. The bike had obviosly been run very low on oil. I had changed the oil right away when I got the bike and had only ridden it about 2 hours.

Since I purchased this "perfect bike" I have already replaced the entire clutch as well as many other badly worn parts.

At this point I figure the motor is pretty much a total loss. I think I will just box up the bike and put it a corner and buy an '04. Maybe the guy I bought it from would like to buy it back. Unfortunately there is little or nothing that I can do about it financially. :(

Damn. I wonder what they did to it?

You may be able to recoup your investment by parting it out. Just something to consider.

You've got to watch those journalist types very closely. If motorcycles were a top priority they wouldn't waste all their time writing about them, they'd be out there riding them like us. Now I've got to get away from this computer so I can get out and ride...

I may be confusing this with another one, but didn't some other members have problems with items purchased from the guy that sold this bike?

Yep, that's the guy. Wasn't it a set of rims?

Seems like what I remember... like someone had removed the tires with a chainsaw.

Wow, that really sucks. I would be seriously pissed off.

But, wasn't that bike raced in several WORCS races? He probably flogged the crap out of it.

Either way, he should of been honest and up-front with you.

Maybe he honestly didn't know the condition of the motor?

Maybe he really did use a chain saw to take the tires off the wheels he sold to another guy? :excuseme:

For me, this whole thing makes all of his reviews at off-road.com "questionable". At best.

I would like to think that he honestly didn't know of any problems. But after the deal he had with the scratched up set of wheels, who knows. And what is the reason for using multiple nicknames?

I just got off of the phone with Eric Gorr at Forward Racing (a real helpful guy) and tomorrow I am boxing up the motor and sending it in to have it rebuilt. I am getting the 480 kit with a JE piston, a new crank, race cam, all bearings replaced throughout, and while I am at it they will port the head. I am setting it up for flat track and this baby will rip.

This is pretty much what I planned to do with it, only I didn't expect to spend the extra $1000 to get there.

In the end I will have a very reliable well built motor that runs great. Oh, that's right, that's what I paid huge $$$ for in the first place. Live and learn.

I will let you guys know how it turns out.

TechGuy was totally exploited on that. It was advertised on eBay as one of the sweetest bikes every made. Every aftermarket part was considered, and only those that would create a better bike as a whole were put on the bike. It was advertised as a bike that was the absolute cream of the crop.

As the eBay auction continued, somebody chimed in that they had bought a set of rims from the same seller, and they were a little dissatisfied with the rims. We saw the rims, and they were servicable, but not what a "picky" person would fly with pride. That sent up some red flags, but TechGuy had already bid on the eBay item.

Then he got the bike, and it was obvious that there was some mis-representation. The further TechGuy digs, the worse it gets.

The seller posted a couple of times, mainly to defend his rim sale, but since this fiasco blew into town, I don't think that guy has made much of a presence.

TechGuy got swindled, bad, and I think he has handled this situation with 1000% more class than I could ever muster, under the same conditions.

My $0.02.

I think the seller has his coming, and TechGuy has a break or two or three headed his way.

TechGuy,
Perhaps you ought to budget a little money for an aluminum bat and a map. Sounds like that guy might need a "break" or two, also.

Please post the TT name and ebay name. Makes me nervous when looking at items for sale at either place. This is the same offroad.com project bike?

Yep, same CRF project bike from off-road.com. One of his TT names was DGA.

But who is KGA?
