It must either be an April fools day joke come early or Yamaha is upto something?
A YZ80 chassis with a 125cc Stroker in it. http://www.motorcycl...ch01yz125f.html
If it's true it would be great for 11 - 14yr olds or even my wife? Now that's a thought.

This appears to be true. In a magazine interview with the creator of the YZ250F he alluded that he was working on a 125 to compete in the 80 class.

You have the true scoop about the YZ125F. I was able to get the truth from a reliable source. He said hoping to be ready for the 2002 model year.

Look at the plastic, it says TT-R. They are trying to pass it off as a highly modified TT-R but....

I got to see Alessi race at the Golden State Nationals and that kid is FAST. He has been helping with the R & D of the bike.

Must be a tough life, be real young, not have to go to school, get to ride all the time and get to hang out with all of the factory studs at Yamaha!!!

Oh...to be young again!!

yzernie, That actually IS a modified TT-R125L. It's been punched out to 150cc and has a yz80 supension and a smattering of BBR parts made specifically for the TT-R. I have most of those parts on my son's. I haven't punched up the motor though. There are alot of parts available for the TT-R. They even shave the fly wheel to give it more snap. I don't know if this is what Yamaha is going to market though. It's basically a scooter motor in an old YZ80 frame.

Also the YZ125F will be water cooled not air like the ttr.

enmerdeur, I agree with you. I believe the new mini thumper will be a baby 250F. This bike that Mike Alessi is riding just isn't as high tech as Yamaha has been with the two bigger bikes.

Sorry Guys,
I suppose when you think about it they wouldn't be racing it yet.
In the past they test behind closed doors so why would it be any different.
I guess we'll have to wait untill August.

yz426, why apologize? I still find it very interesting. At least it means that something is going on in regards to the mini thumper. Mike Alessi does have Yamaha support. Maybe they're just testing the waters! Just think about this. They took basically a play bike and turned it into a class winner (with the help of the rider) with parts that are all available to the general public! Just think what the mini thumper that they build from the ground up will/should be like! This sport has certainly come a long way since I first got interested in it! Gotta love it!!!!!

Have you ever wondered why the YZ426 hasnt won many SX or MX titles? It is mainly because not many pros want to make the "transition" to 4 strokes, because they are used to there 2 smokes and dont want to change (which is totally alright...heck I wouldnt change either if I was Mc Grath)! I think the new YZ125F (or whatever it will be) will be the turning point for our sport. Because the young 80 class riders are our future stars/pros, and if they grow up on 4 strokes, chances are they will ride 4 strokes when the "graduate" to the 125 and 250 class. There is no doubt in my mind that 2 strokes will be obsolete in 15 yrs and 4 strokes will be dominant!

Just close your eyes and imagine what the YZ4**F (or the modern motocrosser at the time) will look like/perform like in 15 years, now that will pretty cool (just think about how much 2 strokes have evolved...well 4 strokes are just getting started) Just food for thought! :)

Very good point Garrett! You are a true visionary. This is what I have in mind while starting my 12 year old son out on a TT-R125L. Not a true racing four stroke but a great bike to learn on until he's ready for the YZ250F. :)

I think Garrett makes some good points. You are wise beyond your years young man.

I think most of us started life on a 4 strokes. Honda ZQ50 and XR75 in my case. But, it came time for a true race bike. Well in 1979 that was the RM125. There was not a 4 stroke choice like there is now or I might have picked it.

I can still remember that first ride on the RM125. I kept wondering why this silly thing was trying to eject me off the back. Well I finially got use to it and life was good. A long lay off and a few 250's later...

Well what can I say back to my roots. In fact, my daughters XR80 sitting next to my YZ426F brings the point home for me.
