08 WR450F Unabiker install with pics

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Thought I would post up some pics for the install I did on the bike this afternoon. (purchased from TT for 120 delivered) All up pretty simple and took about 2 hrs..

Started with this..

This is what comes in the kit. First impressions were it looked like a pretty well made piece of equipment. No rough edges at all...

Remove tank and shrouds. First off you take off the crappy Yamaha "guard". Its easy but you will need to take the rads off. I cant see how you could do this job with all hoses connected. Two bolts for the rads, pop off the top hose, then three screws and the guard is off. Instructions say you could leave the rads on the bike.. under no way shape or form is that possible, you simply cant get your hands in behind the guards to tighten the hex bolts.

Once the guard is off, install the front two supports to the frame side of the guard. The instructions say dont tighten them, then install the rad back to the frame loosely. There is no way that you can tighten them once back on the frame. I skipped the mounting on the frame and installed and tightened the rear support bars (3). The motominder was a casualty.. needed to be moved.

Did this to both sides. Then attached the two center supports and bolted the right rad to the frame.

Next up, mounted the left side to the frame and attached to two centre support bars. It lined up perfectly.

Then install the outer plates. Again even though I tightened up the inside bolts first, these lined up and were not a problem.

The tank and the shrouds went back on. For the bottom mount to the shroud, you need to use the long bolts and the nylon spacer. Of all the mountings, this was the tightest fit.

Other tips for the install

1. There are three size bolts. The shortest are for attaching the support rods to the guards. Two are slightly longer and are for the top outer corners of the radiators and have locknuts. The two long ones are for shroud attachment with the nylon spacer and locknuts.

2. You will need to drain your radiator regardless of what the instructions say. That is unless you have hands of a 4 yr old girl.

3. The hardest part of the job was re-installing the centre radiator hose!

All up happy. And they seem to be rock solid now and should handle falls well.

Nice write up. Thanks for sharing. This will help me since I plan on purchasing these same Rad guards soon, and you know how some aftermarket instructions can go! This would be a great thread to place in the WR index sticky so it can be excessed easily for guys doing the same mod in the future.

What does it mean when you can't see the pictures?

I used to think it was just on old threads when the pics had been removed from the host site, but this was only posted a few weeks back, so surely that isn't the case??

Just finished the install. All went great:thumbsup:

You make a comment about skipping the mounting to the frame. What is this referring to?

Im pretty sure that from memory, the instuctions say that after the install of the front two supports, that you are supposed to mount the radiator to the frame of the bike, THEN install the rear three support bars to the rad..

I couldnt see how that would be possible.. If I installed the radiator to the bikes frame before I installed the rear three supports, I never would have been able to get in to install/tighten the rear three support hex bolts... hence the comment about a 4 yr old girls hands..
