Its a little loud but for the performance differance between it and the stock pipe , I'll take the loud. It also has a nice snap sound to it and you can stand 10 ' behind it and get a puff in the face.

Does that pipe add much more than sound? That really isn't a bad price and I'm having trouble finding a pipe that fits my bike but that one looks like it might. Is it better than just having the baffle removed from the stock r?

The Thumper Racing " Stealth " insert for the stock pipe adds just a bit more sound, but it is a nice rich and deep tone, but nothing that is super loud or annoying.  It is very bearable for city and highway riding alike.  Plus, it flows much better than a stock pipe alone and from what I've heard that people that have put their bike on a dyno, it gives you the most HP gain.  Here's something worth checking out too:

http://www.thumperta...p/t-517872.html

And thanks for the kind words on the build, guys!  I've been sick, and I was also out in Vegas for a little bit, so the bike hasn't seen too much wrench time lately.  It's 80-85% done now.....I still have to grease the axles up, bleed the brakes, get the chain on, tighten most of the bolts down to spec, have the tank painted and then it should be ready to go.  It's just little stuff left to finish, but they say that can be the hardest part sometimes.  I'll be getting some more pics this weekend.

Thanks!

I actually am going to be rebuilding another 1992 XR250L that I recently bought.  This one is going to be used more for off road, but also a little on the street.  There are some pictures of it on the previous page or two of this thread.

Pretty sweet build you have going, I tripped across ur thread looking for sources for a supermoto (shorty) front fender that should fit my '04 XR400. Yours looks pretty nice, mind me asking where you got it?

The front fender is actually a "YZ Supermoto" fender from Maier.

Hi
Nice looking bike, How are you going with it? Anymore pics?
I am looking at getting another set of stock wheels or hubs and lacing up some supermoto wheels one day in the future & wanted to ask what width the rims are?
Going for rego ASAP & I have just fitted a near new but old 18" road tyre to the back (I was given it for free) and it feels like alot less spinning weight than knobby tire's, Since I will be using the bike to commute to & from work mostly I want dual sport tire's for the stock wheels and some nice road tire's later on on some 17" rims to have some fun with?
I will keep me eye out on ebay for the correct width rims when I know what to look for?

Jpswift1 seems to be MIA or is on too nice of a holiday?
Anyway here is where I am up to>

Not the best pics (taken at night), I have my new LED blinkers and LED flasher can fitted and working sweet, I was given the 18" road tire (bridgestone battleax) a while back and near threw it in the bin at one stage thinking I would never use it, Well... it has near 90%+ tread & will do for now till I get some 17" rims and matching spokes

I plan on getting hold of a set of later 99+ XR250 forks so I may use a later model wheel/hub for the front
From what I have read the later 99+ forks are much easier to fit than USD forks, Much cheaper, They dont change the geometry & dont put the trail out

I also meant to ask what length (OR PART NUMBER) spokes you used for the wheels (I know you mentioned buchanan spokes)
Can anyone tell me what width 17" rims to use on an XR250?

96 up XR250R forks are a direct bolt on, no need to change any thing else just swap the forks.
3.50x17 front  4.25x 17 rear bought my hoops and spokes from Pro Cycle.

Thanks for the details Jonny, Anymore pics of your XR250LSM?
How tight in the swingarm & forks is the fit for the rims & tyres?

Great fit in the swing arm w/150 tire, front is a little tight w/120 tire but no problems with rubing.

Thanks for the pics, Your bike looks pretty sweet with them wheels & fat tyres

Were you able to use your original pre 96 front wheel with the later model forks or did you use a late model front hub/wheel for the 17" rim?
Also where did you get your wavey lookin disc rotor's

Great fit with the chain guard removed.  :smirk:
150 BARELY clears (after cutting off other chain guide bracket).
140 would be the choice.
130 is really plenty of meat for these super light bikes with meager hp. (2nd pic)

Hi guys!  I'm back.  Sorry, I haven't been on the site for a while.  The XR250L motard is in the garage for the winter and I must say, I'm very happy with it.  I'm going to go one tooth from 13 down to 12 in the spring time, just to give it a little more grunt and I'm going to get the seat done in red with a black center section like the newer Hondas.  Other than that, I was just riding it and having fun with it.  I'm really happy to see people posting on this thread again and I'd be more than happy to help with anything I can.  PS- these bikes can CORNER like no bike I've ever ridden before and they're an absolute blast in tight twisties.  So go ahead guys, ask away, lets get some more 250L's out on the street!  And by the way, thanks again for all your help on my bike, Pat!

And XR250inOZ, I LOVE your 250L........that's a really beautiful bike!

Thanks Swift,
SHHHH, Dont say that too loud, It is infact an XR250R/P according to the complience plate and the paint code sticker that is still under the back guard behind the left numberplate, I am using a 250L pumper carb though
Its coming along slowly, I was lucky enough to find it in really good (MECHANICAL) condition even though it had heaps of parts missing & looked like something you would find at the rubbish tip, This was day one, Gee, I have not looked at this pic for a while, What a piece crap it was, No carby, No front caliper, No speedo etc etc, I took a bit of a gamble not knowing if it even runs but the motor is tight & feels like new>

Posted Image

I just fitted a new uni filter & im in the process of wiring up a new Trailtech Vapor speedo & matching Trailtech dash setup

I also wanted to ask jpswift,  What size is your rear sprocket & what brand? All the major brand name sprockets seem to be around 50 tooth, I want to run somewhere around a 44 or 42 rear, The 17" wheels will throw all the ratios out when I change over though
Less chain & smaller sprockets front & rear should amout to a little bit of a weight reduction and because its moving weight its an even better weight reduction

Well here are a few things to consider.  I have a stock gearing setup of 13 front 40 rear tooth for now.  I plan on putting a 12 tooth on the front just to give it a little more torque and pull on the bottom end.  The rear sprocket is stock.  The front sprocket is a JT. http://www.jtsprockets.com/  I'm very happy with the quality of it.  When you put a 17" rear wheel with say a 140/70 rear tire you also lower the gearing (higher numeric value).  Since that's the size I'm running, I'm geared slightly lower (numerically higher) than stock......stock final drive ratio being 3.08, so my 13/40 with a 140/70/17 rear tire is about a 3.21 ratio.  When I put the 12 toot front sprocket on, it'll bring my gear ratio to 3.46, a slight bit less of top end, but more torque on the bottom end.  Here's a useful chart you can use on the JT Sprocket site.  http://www.jtsprocke...jtgearratio.pdf

Next, since your bike a 250R, not a 250L you might need to use different sprockets than the 250L because of the offset of the sprocket.  Read the Rick Ramsey article, this will help a lot.  http://justxr.com/jh.../xr250ldoc.html  The gears in the case of the 250R and 250L are the same 1st through 3rd.  4th through 6th gears, the ratios are slightly higher (numerically smaller).

By the way, your XR has come a long way!  That is quite the transformation........nice work!

I used a 92 XR250L front hub and had the 17 laced onto it.
I don't remember where I got the front rotor, it's a EBC 280mm.
If I was to do it again I would go with a 320mm rotor.
Check with Sprocket Specialists they seem to have the largest gearing selection.

Not a problem JP, I'm glad to hear that you got the little L finished and are enjoying it.
I miss the light & maneuverable little L.... but the power of the XR650L is GREAT!

A common mod here is to use 18" Yamaha TDR250 front wheels, looks a bit nicer to me than the smallish 17" ones.
