08 Wr 450 starting Question

Hi all, my buddy has an 08 Wr 450 and it battles to start using the E-start, but fires up first kick, I dont think its a jetting issue as it would be the same on both,

he has a new battery and its fully charged........

Any ideas?

my 2004 was like this for a little while - wouldn't fire with the e-start, but would kick over just fine...even after the jet kit.

I put in an adjustable fuel screw and got the pilot circuit really tuned in. I didn't kick the bike over even one time yesterday during a full day of riding. You might check the fuel screw setting, made a huge difference for me

thanks KGsloan, I am pulling the carb tomorrw to see what jets are in and to do the O ring mod, it has the AIS removed by the dealer and they jetted it too.....

One more thing, are the oil filters the same on the 250's and 450's ?

Estart turns the engine over much slower than by kicking. A perfect fuel screw setting like KGSloan says makes a big difference.

Agree. I almost always cold start the bike by kick and it starts right up and use the e-start once it's warm. It just doesn't seem to have the strongest starting system on the planet, but spins a lot faster when warm. I never mess with my fuel screw, but that's more a function of the bike running pretty well as is and I probably am not knowlegable enough to know what I'm doing with it anyway. I will say though, having the correct pilot jet seems to make a world of difference in any bike. I started with the JD kit and the stock pilot jet, but eventually went up one size and it seemed to help quite a bit. It also got ride of an annoying studder that used to be there just a hair above idle.

The starter and charging systems on these bikes are pretty week to be honest, add the resistance of cold oil and your fuel/air mix really needs to be right on. As mentioned above an adjustable fuel screw will be your friend.

After that its just tinkering

My '08 450F exhibits the same problem. If it wouldn't be too much trouble, could someone explain which screw is the fuel screw or better yet, post a pic of it on the bike? Where should I buy an adjustable fuel screw? I've only had my '08 for a few weeks and am a n00b to dirt bikes in general. Thanks.

I had the same problem but mine was the stator, it ohmed fine and looked fantastic, I never could see anything wrong with it, by chance my neighbor had the same bike I swapped EVERYTHING and the stator was the last....

i purchased the adjustable fuel screw from my local yamaha dealer, they had one on the shelf - made by GYTR.

it will really allow you to fine tune in the setting without pulling the carb or using some funky little screw driver...this was what allowed me to FINALLY get the bike tuned in just right, because I could make small 1/8 turn adjustments and ride for a while, determine if better/worse, make a small adjustment, and repeat....simple with the adjustable fuel screw

Here is a pic and instructions on how to access your fuel screw, to replace with aftermarket fuel screw compliments of the 07 WR Mods Sticky.

Her is a picture of the bottom of the float bowl. You can see the little aluminum plug that needs to be removed to get to the fuel screw. If you have the bowl off then just punch it out. You might be able to get something into the small hole and pry it out also.

Using the elec start (at least on a 2008) results in two 'dead' cycles before the CDI will create spark
