What year for a kx250f

hey guys! the new race season is starting and i want a new kx250f. i am on a tight budjet (im only 14) so i was thinking a max of $2500 for a used bike. I have the option to get a 2005 for $1300 but i know that it doesnt have the alominum (sorry for spelling) frame and i also hear that kx250f's were sucky till 06 true or not???? On that note There is also a 2006 i was lokking at however it is $2300 which is getting expensive for a 14 year old!!! so i guess my real question is go for the 05 or save longer and risk missing season sign ups for the 06 or any other bike????

I'm not trying to turn you away from kx250f's but buying a used four stroke bike is generaly not a good ideah for someone your age and on a tight budget.. You are best to get a used two stroke dirtbike.

Please do your self a favor and heed my advice.. you will be better off in the long run..

i dont race, but what is the reason that you would advise him not to go with a 4 stroke? just trying to learn. i am new to 4 stroke racing bikes.

If he bought a brand new bike it would be less of an issue.. He is on a low budget and only 14.. a used 4stroke bike is allmost a ticking timebomb if the previos owner didn't know how to maintain the bike..

at 14 with his budget it would be better to get a used 2stroke and have less to deal with should something go wrong..

I own 4strokes and Love them but I would never buy a used bike again.. If I did it would have to be one hell of a deal and I would rebuild the motor.. [unless I buy one of my friends bike which I take care and know all its maintaince history]

three problems here 1. i already have a kx 125 and rm 125 love them both but the power just isnt there on the race track. 2. i already spoke with the owner and he said that the oil was changed every 3-5 rides the air filter was cleaned ever 2-3 rides and the valves were checked every 20-30 hours. Isnt that a well maintained 4 stroke?( i honestly dont know but from a 2 stroke rider id almost say over maintained) 3. you said i should get a new bike but then you went on to say im a 14 year old on a budget so how am i supposed to buy a new bike?

dont get me wrong im not shooting down your pointers but merely questioning your advice

i would get a 06' or newer. you can race the 250cc 2t's with the 250f now in mx. cost to run are about the same. but when the 4t stops running or goes boom well its time to sale something to fix the bike.

Depends on how long a "ride" is.

Air filter every second or third is not often enough. Even if you ride trails. In my opinion.

That is just seller talk. Always assume they did less than they say.

Do yourself a favor and do NOT buy a used 04 or 05 kx250f, or you'll be spending more time on TT than you will riding. They are time bombs. You'd be safer with an 06 or newer. Spend some time looking for the best deal and don't just jump on the first bike you see.

NM desert racers is right.. You can race a 250twosmoke along side the 250f's

you do not want an 04-05 bikes...

Just because the owner tells you he did this or did that doesn't mean crap.. Most people will say anything to sell something..

You can do what you choose and I hope if you do get a 4stroke it doesn't give you fits..

How ever you're in my opinion better off getting a used 250 two smoke.

What I meant about getting a new bike and the mentioning the budget.. another member asked me why I am saying not to buy a fourstroke.. WHat I meant is that buying a new 4stroke if the best option on longevity due to you knowing you did all maintaince ect vs buying someone elses neglected bike.. I then turned around and said you're on a budget and unable to purchase a new bike so used would be your only option and INMHO you're better off with a use 250 two stroke..

To be 100% honest with you, I was in the same sitation as you last year. I came off of a 125 and wanted at 250f really bad even though everyone told me I should get a 250 smoker. I only had about $2600 to spend, so I looked for the best deal possible. I found an 06 with less than 20 hours on it that was in mint shape for $2300! Then since I was almost broke, I got a job and made sure I had enough money to fix it if it decided to break on me. I am now 16, and glad I made the purchase, but I was really lucky that there were no big problems with the bike.

So I guess, if you buy one, do yourself a favor and get a job, asap.

ok ok ok i get what ALL of you are telling me, to get a two stroke, but i DONT want another two srtoke!!!! so i guess my only other option is to get a 06 or newer 250f which IS what i want but that 05 was a really good deal and the price difference between a 2005 and a 2006 kx250f is like $800-$1000!!! thats a lot of money for me!!!

But i guess i will take your advice and save longer for an 06 or newer thanks guys!!

I think what most people are saying is that as a young man with limited funds, you should be mindful to the fact that rebuilding the top end of a 4 stroke costs a lot more than a 2T. Your savings of $1000 on that 2005 model might easily be dumped right into a head, piston, cylinder, gaskets, and other miscellaneous items after your first ride on it.

Newer models aren't exempt from problems either. You might buy an 06 or later and need valve work too. It just depends on the previous owner. That is why it was suggest to buy brand new.

I'm of the mindset that if it's cheap, buy it, go through it, adjust and repair everything, and ride it. Just be ready to spend a lot more money when it does stop working.

I have never bought a new bike (don't race), but aside from that I agree with everything pr1mal said. The one thing I always do when I get a bike is to take a look at the top end when I get it. The worst bike I bought (it was a good deal ?) was a 4 stroke that ran good (I rode it) and the owner said it was well maintained. When I started to pull the top end down I about cried. The PO had run it low on oil and it ruined the cam and the head. So unless you know the person, take their maintenance story with a large grain of salt.

Listen to the guys on here when they say don't get a 2004-5. Get a new or get a 2006+ and be prepared. i got a 2005 for $1000 from a friend who had had a full top end and i was there and have visual proof. 20 hrs and extreme maintaining by me and broke a valve. Goes to show you no matter what yr or how fresh the motor they break:banghead: Just get the 2006 and learn how to check valves often.

I went with the used kx 250f (2006). cost me $2600 and iv'e already put $500+ into it and it still needs more work. at that price for a 250f, i don't know your experience with bikes but if its limited bring someone who knows their stuff because its basically russian roulette. you may get thaat guy who really only "hardly" rode it and "never raced" it but chances are you wont and they are not cheap to repair / work on. i love my bike and am glad i have it but its become a labour of love.

I wouldn't have any issues selling my 2005 and being comfortable that in the right hands [one who does maintaince] that it wouldn't have to do any major work for two years.. By that I mean two years it will need replacement parts just like all bikes..

2005's did have problems but nothing like the 04's problems.. The major issue with the 05 was the wrong torque spec on the cam caps that lead to cams spinning gears.. I will say that the steel frame of the 05 had alot better handling then the 06+ does.. How ever the suspension is not as good so most people felt the 06 was better.. The motor on the 05 with upped compression it is not bad.

By the way 909 mentioned when you're looking for a used bike and said the words hardly rode, low hrs, never raced, adulted ridden..

Ok So now lets me explain something.. When people say these things they are trying to ply you..

If you can find one that was raced with low hrs will be your best option this bike would have been taken care of allthough ridden hard it will probably be in better shape then some dope who rode trails and never did maintaince..
