Just got the new 01 YZ426F, After I got the 2-stroke gas out of it the dealer was nice enough to provide me with, I finally got to ride it!

I have only been able to ride the thing at my house where I have some small doubles, whoops, and trails. I'm an intermediate rider comimg off a long positive relationship with a CR250. The first thing I noticed is that the way you have to use the throttle on the face of jumps is very different. Does anyone have any advice for a new 426 rider that will help me make the transition? I flat out love the bike! Pretty off go go!

Keep the gas on on jumps. Don't use the clutch like a 2-stroke. Most important, give yourself plenty of time to get a feel for the bike.

I have had my bike a month now. I still am not 100% converted to 4-stroke. But, I'm getting there.

Jumps, even throttle all the way off the face.

Forget brake slides.

Clutch used for starts and to keep bike from stalling.

Use little rear brake. Try to get the compression braking working for you. I have been trying to downshift more going into corners just to get more of a braking affect.

Let the bike to the work. If it picks a line for you, go with it.

Right now I all I have been trying to do is ride smooth. I figure speed will come.

Make use of that torque; roll on the power. As for the jumps, just don't let off the throttle. 426's are awesome!

Good Lord. Your “Dumb Dealer Story” trumps mine. We should start a contest.

I sincerely hope you refrain from taking any of their advice or letting them work on your bike. Thumpertalk is a much better source of good info than your average dealer IMO.

Always good to welcome another Texan to Thumpertalk.

Thanks for all the response guys, so far by what I can tell you were all right on! It's hard to get used to keeping that trottle on the face of jumps though, do that on a 2-smoke and you usually find yourself on your back! As for the dealer.........

did you have a bad experience with K's Motosports? I have had very good experiences with them, and they are one of the biggest dealers in the Houston area and generally have good prices since they are big!

Do you ride MX or trails Idan and whereabouts in Houston are you located?

It seems like there are tons of Texan Thumpertalkers in here...we really need to organize a local ride! That would be a blast!

IDAN,

Corner speed---similar to riding a 125, keep your monentum and roll on the juice.

Braking---I had to use the front brake on my 98 400, I used it on my new 01 426 and almost endo'd. As said above, use the engine braking to your advantage. You can go in deeper and come out faster.

Clutch--- Already stated above, starts and to keep from stalling. I probably use it more than I should but you have to do what works for you.

Jumping---Stay on the gas but be smart. Stay on to long and you'll end up on your back just like a 2 stroke.

Starts---Depending on gearing, I have used 3rd gear on long start straights. When the rest are shifting you are puling away.

Engine---Use the torque to your atvantage. You can rev it or let it pull through a lower gear. When I rev it I'm usually on a straight or start.

Enjoy---Learn the bike and adjust to it's strong and weak points, just like you would any other bike. It takes patience for a long time 2 stroke rider to get used to the differences. In the end you'll be glad you have it.

I really can't say it was a bad expirience. They made me a good deal on the bike, and I guess it's an honest mistake. But when you set down almost 6G on a new bike, and the first thing you have to do it take it apart, it kinda leaves a bad taste in in your mouth (and a sore spot in yer leg from kickin). I probably should have just taken it back and let them kick and figure it out, but I live in Cut-N-Shoot and it's a pretty good trip to take it back.

As for riding, I dig it all! I spend most of my time at the motox track, but with the national forest so close, I like to go up there and work on techniqe. If that doesn't work, I just jump on my Pig (Harley) and head to Arkansas for a little wick twistin in the hills!

I'm all for meeting for a ride, and maybe even organizing a club. It would be a blast to show up at one of the local tracks and take it over. I know one reason I bought the 426 is because I got tired of looking at the rear fenders all the time! Count me in, and let me know if anyone is organizing a ride.
