Flywheel weight problem

I put a 12oz flywheel weight on my 2000 yz426.I split the key that holds the flywheel on the crankshaft in half, the long way. I couldn't find one before my enduro so I cut a master link and filed it to size. It worked for 25 miles and then split. Is this common? Is my flywheel not tight enough? It calls for 35 lbs of torque. If my torque wrench is inches per pound, do I multiply 35 times 12? I just got another key, so hopefully it will be fine. Thanks guys. I appreciate you all. :)
