I have a 2009 YZ450F. Can someone explain to me why some top of valve covers are silver and mine is black. Seems about 30% silver and 70% black.

Because the '08's and '09's were painted black.

Actually the 08 had a silver valve cover (as did earlier models). The 09 was the first year of the black valve cover.

I guess I should have been more specific, I have seen 09 advertised for sale even on tt with silver valve covers. I guess they aren't really 09's.

Since the black is only paint and rubs right off, a lot of guys just strip it off because it looks better that way than with a big rubbed spot.
