2010 cover above spark plug

Recommended Posts

I am pretty sure this has been on here before but I searched and couldn't find it. There is a plastic shield below the gas tank and directly above the valve cover spark plug area. The manual simply refers to it as a cover and gives no instructions on how to remove. There are two plastic pins at the back that hold it on. From the diagram in the book it appears like they just "snap" in. This apparently isnt the case as I managed to break one while removing.

Anybody know the right way for removing these? I am going to buy a couple of extra for future use as you can not get to the spark plug without removing this cover.

Grey, this might be a good procedure to put in a sticky for the 2010/2011 bikes. Hopefully it will prevent future owners from making the same mistake.

Take a small pair of pliers and gently pull the center of the snap "up"....this releases the insert that goes into the frame and allows the "cover" to be pulled towardsthe rear and removed. It has 2 tangs on the front that retain it on the front, and just pulls out once the inserts are removed....

No... You push the center pin in to release the inserts. I use a small t-handle allen wrench.

Yep, that's how they work: push the centers in a until they click to release the fastener, then lift it out. Push the center pin back up flush with the top again before reinstalling it.

Don't push too hard or far, or you will push the center pin out of the fastener and possibly loose it.

All that's in the manual, you know.

What page cause I couldn't find it?

I ended up with the center pins pushed in and yanked the whole thing out in frustration. It looked to me like you had to have the center pins up and slightly out in order to remove the shield... but I guess I was wrong..

Thanks for the response. Grey, I looked through that manual 3 times and could not find anything for this cover. They might be common fasteners to the Japanese but in 30+ years of riding dirt bikes they are a first for me.

I asked this same question back in March or April. I found it, but not on the page you would expect. It is on page 1-11. "REMOVING THE QUICK FASTENER". It just shows a picture of the "rivet". I will have to say, it is located in a rather obscure location in the manual. Yamaha doesn't talk in the manual about removing the plastic part above the spark plug with these fasteners. I found it by chance.

Actually, I was doing some work on the computer, saw this and went out to get my manual, so Grayracer can quote the page the next time this comes up.

I knew I'd seen it. I'll remember it next time. ?
btw, I don't understand how the pin can remain in the "up" position as the tank sits right on top of this area. There would be no room for the pin to remain popped up to secure the head cover.... ?
Read the page referenced. Explains the whole thing with pictures and everything.
