Battery for 450?

Hello, (First post so hello haha)

I recently bought an 06 Wr450f, Today riding my battery shit it self, When I bought it, It wouldn't started electric start so I charged it with a charger and only got two starts out of it (With out riding).

Today a big ride (20 miles +) it started on electric start good then we pulled up for a breather and I went to start it again and had no dash.

Got it home on the trailer, Checked the battery and it had less then 8 volts, Wouldn't take charge etc, Borrowed a friends and it fired straight away.

Ok, Now for my main question, I'm going to buy a new battery.

Is there a good one I should buy or just another basic standard type one?

You have a couple of options. The standard battery is the Yuasa YTZ7S. It's definitely the best of the lead acid batteries available but pricey at around $110. There are a slew of cheaper knock off's but none of them have the capacity of the Yuasa and vary all over the spectrum in terms of quality and reliability. Still for the most part they get the job done. They can be had from $35 - $60. The other option is to go with one of the LiPO batteries like the one Turntech sells. I haven't used one but the reports are generally favorable. They are much lighter than the stock battery and are supposed to have plenty of cranking power but they are at the top of the heap pricewise at around $160. No matter what battery you get be sure and check the charging voltage after you install it. Your old battery might have died a normal death or it may be dead because it wasn't getting charged. At the price of these batteries you really don't want to cream in another one.

Not only check the system for charging, make sure it isn't over charging. Sending the battery too much juice for 20 minutes=bad. Not sending it any on a fully charged battery should have it still working (unless you were using the lights and it's pulling from the battery).

Old mate I bought it off didn't get to ride the bike so it sat in his shed 90% of the time.

So I am thinking now that I'm riding it alot more then he was the battery actuallly got a chance to charge up but since it was low/empty on fluids its not holding its charge.

Also I'd much rather get a brand new one then top this one up with fluid and for it to fail on me again in the near future.

I might check out those Lipo batteries now =D

I bought a Varta battery for my 03 WR450 because it was 7Ah capacity, a lot of the cheaper ones were only like 5Ah. The Varta was around £50 ($80).

When it arrived it was one of those that you have to fill yourself with the supplied acid. It was all sealed down correctly but the first time I rode the bike with the new battery most of the acid poured out all over the bike.

I don't think it liked being laid over at an angle like it has to on a WR450F

I've been looking at LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate, "LiFePo"), batteries. It seems that LFP are the ones to go for rather than LiPo. Ones that are made from A123 cells are apparently the best.

Unlike LiPo the LFP ones aren't likely burst into flames and burn your bike/garage/house down.

Although not actually designed for bikes, these look interesting for the price

What I'm thinking, Is I'll get a cheap on from the local battery place untill I can get one from Turntech. I just need my bike running for the weekend, I don't think a battery will come within 4 days from the states to Australia haha.

Not sure if you'se have heard of Oddessy Batteries but there smallest one is just a tad to big.

Oddessy batteries are apprently the way to go when it comes to cars and such.

But the ones from Turn Tech do look and sound the goods!

TurnTech batteries are LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) not LiPo (Lithium Polymer) batteries.

The battery that came with my bike when I bought it used took a crap on me a month in. Didn't run one for a while then picked up a battery after I started to get lazy on the uphill starts. I have good luck with a cheep-o battery for ~$65 from my local dealer. Just make sure you put it on a battery isolater (AKA - Battery Tender) I use the harbor freight one, and at $8 bucks its not a bad deal. Most of the batteries come with a 1 year warranty so you could technically "kill it" in 11 months and get another, but that would be dishonest. ?

At this stage I've bought one from my local battery place for $55.

So I'll use that for abit, Then once I've got some spare cash I'll get a lifo or lipo one.

Can you start the WR's say without a battery? Or do you need the dash etc?
