Im looking to gear down my 05 yz 450 for the woods to help compensate for only having a 4 speed. would going down a tooth in the front do the job, or should I go up a tooth in the rear sprocket in addition to this?

thanks

Gearing down won't compensate for a 4 speed, exactly. The low gears of the 4 and 5 speed YZ450 transmissions are the same. 4th gear is in between where 4th and 5th in a 5 speed would be, so the 4 speed lacks a little top speed on the 5, but that's it.

But you may want to drop down a bit because of the rather tall, MX first gear, as some do. In that case, either approach is OK, although using a smaller front is more likely top allow you to change gearing without changing the chain length, and the '05 had a fairly large rear cog already.

so would going down to a 13t in the front make a noticeable difference, and is the stock front sprocket a 14t on an 05?

thanks

Yes, give it a try plus its cheaper than a larger rear and like gray said chain will fit you'll just loose a little adjustment range.

Yes to both. Since the chain ratio is 3-something to one, one tooth at the front is like three at the rear.
