Can I make an 09 WR450f have less power?

Recommended Posts

Sounds like a strange question eh?:ride:

I've had both a 250f and a 450f. I have the same complaints as everyone else; the 450 beats the crap out of me, and the 250 does a great job, but just leaves me wanting a little more sometimes.

Is there anything out there, or any ideas on how a guy could build or buy a simple switch that would reduce the power on the 450 to make it perform just like the 250? I know you can't electronically remove 20lbs, but just like the new GSXR1k and the BMW S1000RR the rider can select "modes" for how much power and how the power comes on. Wouldn't it be sweet to have a "mud/ice" setting, or "hole shot" or "fuel conservation"...

Maybe I'm dreaming. Or maybe this idea will have to wait for the WR450Fi of the future.

Did you do the grey wire mod? If so, restore it to stock

Did you do the throttle stop? If so, restore it to stock.

Did you modify the exhaust? If so, return it to stock.

If you did none of these and the bike still is a bit much for you, consider a different bike, a more enduro/dual sport machine like a DRZ 400.

FI/Carb mods and ignition mods only take the edge off. You can get a different CDI like a Vortex for about $1,000, they have a bar switch that let you go between ignition maps but I suspect you want more than a CDI can offer.

Sell the 450 and use the money to put a big bore kit and cams in the 250.

I think I like this idea the best. I had a 2001 WR250f and really the only time I wished for more hp was in the dunes, and I don't know if I'll ever ride the dunes again.

I'm sure a newer wr250f would have more power stock than my clapped out 01 ever did.

I know this goes against every grain of every thought any motor head should ever have, but I think I feel better having not enough power than having too much. I know, I know; you can never have too much power... But maybe I'm getting old, wise, and mature in my mid-life.

There's an old pilot's saying:

"It's better to be on the ground wishing you were flying,

than in the air wishing you were on the ground."

What kind of riding do you do?

Is it too much power, or just too "aggressive"?

try dropping a couple teeth from the rear sprocket for example.

I also found the FMF megabomb really smoothed out the power delivery and made it much more tractable and "friendly" on the bottom end (easier to ride slow)

Free mod-

twist the right grip a little less.

Well... there's a piece of bad advice right there....?:bonk:?

Its smart of you to realize when the bike is too much. There's a whole generation full of fools (me included) that have a box full of casts, braces and crutches from not being able to properly control the bike. Crashing does not mean you are learning.

It took two years before I really got comfortable on my wr450 (yes, I'm a slow learner)

I second the idea to restore the bike to its original state and undo the free mods. If its still too much, then maybe downsizing would be good.

  • 2 weeks later...

I was afraid of the 450's power before I even bought it.Also I understood how a more powerfull machine can be more driveable. My 450 was a handfull to drive in stock form. The bog made me hold throttle on entry to keep from getting bucked off when the motor came to life. That made me tire quickly.

After all the free mods, rejet, and A/P circuit mod, the bike is now wicked scary fast, But so so so much easer to ride. Ofcourse, I will never try or be able ride it to it's capablity, but my riding is improved and no longer afraid. :excuseme:

Don't worry, you'll soon get used to the power. Before you even realize, you'll find yourself opening the throttle wide open, even if it's just for a second or two. These bikes are so easy to ride.

STOP COMPLAINING! - i am sick of people saying the 450 flogs me!, get over it, or get fit (im not fit myself but i would hardly say it flogs me, it only flogs you as much as you want it to) as for weight 5kg difference......... massive.

if you are that much of a perfectionist, go buy a Berg 390 or KTM 400.

It's not only the power you are wrestling with it's the weight too. The combination just takes more effort. I have a YZ 250 2t and while it has the same HP as the WR it takes a lot less effort with some types of riding. It feels like a mountain bike compared to the WR. And, if you screw up bad with the throttle on the YZ 2t it will remind you by throwing you into a tree when it makes 47 HP all at once. It's all a matter of preference. It's just impossible to have the perfect bike for all types of riding.

If you suck at riding anyways it really doesn't matter that much.
