which tire to buy

Granted, I have not shod Donelaps on my bikes in the past 7 years, my last Donelap being a D752, and what a POS tire after a short period. The tire was awesome when new, but once the corners got all radiused, the tire's preformance just went down the $hitter.... Maybe i'll try a new version and draw a more positive conclusion.

I also recently tried a Kenda Milliville, and another POS tire after only a short period of time , way too much wasted wheelspin in softer loose terrain.

Gray, the dunlop 745 wears faster than a 756. Supperd for those three off road rides in hardpack though...

OK, but I never said anything about the 745. Tried one once and didn't like it.

I live in the desert and we have tons of rocks. I ride with Maxxis desert it and they last a long time on my 426.

I've got 14 hrs. on an MH3 and the m pattern or block is completely worn away even on side knobs. The edges of the knobs are very rounded. The previous tire I ran was an MX51 and was even worse for wear and chunked four knobs not long after 14 hrs. I wasn't pleased with it's durability but thought it performed well for me otherwise. Will be buying another MH3 shortly.

I bought a set of MX51's and I am very please with how they are performing. Bike feels more planted than with the 756's and I could get on the gas earlier and harder out of corners.

Anything's got to be better than a 756 front I wouldn't use one of those if it was new and sharp.

Yeah that's why they're discontinued ha. I bought a set of 756's right before the MX51's came out which i was pretty bummed when I found out in my Dirtrider that they would be coming out soon . So i just waited til they wore out, which as you know didn't take long and just picked up a set of 51's a couple weeks ago. After the few first laps I was like, "Oh, so that's what traction is like."

I ride a yz250 I no this a 450 forum but I run a perelli scorpion extra tire 120/90/19 and that bad boy hooks up and it hasn't worn down that fast. It's a really nice tire.

I bought a KTM XC-F 505 that had a 120 Maxis IT already on it. Traction was pretty good and it lasted for a couple 2 hour X/C races plus a few practice rides (it wasn't new when I bought the bike). It finally chunked several knobs in this last hard pack track and I replaced with my usual Pirelli, this time the 120/100/18 Extra. I've had good luck with the Extra series. What surprised me was how much lighter the Pirelli was, just throwing them on a scale, it looked like a good 2 pound differance, which is a lot in un-sprung weight.

I will take a perdictable tire over a long wearing tire any day! I have had good luck with 739's, 745's and 756's! I can tolerate a Maxxis (currently running IT Desert), but hate the stiffness and how it does not excel when new (on a side it stay's just as blah when worn). Just my $.02.

The Extra is a good longer lasting race worthy tire. the Michelin M12 xc is a super duper long lasting tire, the key to it is 8psi. BaileyAZ, if all you ride is dirt then you could use a high performance tire like the dunlops and get decent wear out of them. If you ride XC they will work good but wear fast.

Hmm, gonna have to try this MX51...I also like the Starcross MH or MS. They seem to last a long time, good grip in most MX conditions and I flip them around for a little more use.

I believe he means if all you ride is MX (meaning on a groomed MX track) with good tilled up dirt.

Not on your back yard track where you ride all the time and the ground is packed down hard,rocks laying everwhere,roots sticking up ect.ect.ect.

MX tires lasts a lot longer when you just ride on tracks that groomed and raced on regularly and you are not on graval rodes or in fields riding.

I ride desert and a little track... but mostly desert! Here in the Phoenix area we have some pretty diverse riding areas. I am a B- rider and have been fortunate to be able to ride twice a week for the last year or so. I am very fickle when it comes to my bike set up and especially my tires. My point about the Maxxis Desert IT is that it is blah! It is ok when new and ok when worn. And for what it is worth, I am on my forth ride on the IT and it is starting to chunk. I have had better luck with the couple of Dunlops that I have tried than Maxxis. I like when a tire has good breaking and acceleration when when new. I also like, when a tire tells you that it's time to be replaced because of poor braking and starts to slide, (Maxxis does not really do this IMO, it just slowly fades away like the sun set). That is when I think to myself that I have one more ride in this tire!
