which tire to buy

Recommended Posts

I need to replace the rear tire on an '08 yz450f. It came with the Dunlop D756 which looks like its replacemt is now the MX51. I ride in Middle tennesse and there is a lot of rock in the soil, and the tire seemed to wear very quickly. Should I replace it with the MX71, which is for hard terrain? or should I keep using the MX51?

MX51, I have not used the 71 but have seen it. It definitely looks like a tire for super hard packed blue groove tracks. 450's eat tires get use to it. I also use Maxxis desert IT out here and it seem to handle the rocks in the desert a bit better than the MX51 but other than that I prefer the dunlop.

i just bought a starcross mh3 and love it. have like 4 good rides on it and the edge is barely gone. i ride some soft stuff but it gets hard quick and the tired hooks up good. i've also heard they're a tough tire. just my thoughts. o ya i ride a 07' yz450

The michelin m12 xc is hands down the longest lasting tire Ive tried. Even on the 450, on gravel, what ever it doesnt matter, it lasts great. The pirelli Extra is a good compromise of wear vs performance but it doesnt last as long a michelin m12 xc. The trick to the m12 xc is 8psi any more and you will be loose on hard pack.

952's work pretty well. They're like a lower cost alternative to the MX series. Better wear than the 756 by far, though not like the MX51, pretty versatile, and a good desert tire all around. My son prefers them. Here's one at work:

If you have the money, MH3 hands down. The Maxxis IT holds up well, and works pretty good on hard pack, but if you get into anything remotely soft it sucks pretty bad. If you go the Maxxis route, I much prefer the SI. It holds up like the IT, but seems to hook up better in most conditions. The MX51 seems to be an alright tire for a Dunlop, but I have never been blown away by a dunlop in any department, performance, longevity, or price.
