So, I am going to attempt this change. I am a little nervous about it but I have come to the realization that I need to get the old nasty sludge out of there and it is time.

I have the shop manual but I would like any advice from people who have done it.

Can anybody run through the process

Freakboy,
The manual does a good job of walking you through the process. You need to take the cartridge out so you can inspect for rust on the damper rod. You probably don't need to separate the tubes. Find someone locally to help you or that will let you watch them do theirs.
