brake TANK, RESERVOIR Problems

The tank on the rear brakes on my wr426 keeps distorting in shape causing it to leak, I but on a new one last year and now the same thing again. Anyone have any ideas, I know it has to be from heat from the exhaust but how do I get rid of it?

Common issue,

I used to throw a clamp on mine occasionally to get it back to original shape

....of course not while you are riding!

Two problems: 1. the exhaust may be slightly plugged causing excessive heat clean the screen to reduce restriction. 2. the brake res mounting tab is flimsy an can easily be bent. bend it away from the exhaust as much as the aluminum protector will allow. I have even modified (bent) the protector to allow more clearance between the brake res and the exhaust.

I talked to a friend of mine at the dealership he said to get one for a newer wr 450 -or 250 that is all in one then it does away with the plastic tank

Same issue with My WR400 - 99. Had to look around a bit but found some adhesive heat wrap used mainly on cars for headers etc..

Just wrapped the bastard completely and seems to be doing the job, won't really know for a few months ( only an occasional rider... Dam work commitments ), Even covered the inside of the side panel next to the exhaust - Recently fitted a Staintune and its starting to affect it

Yup...pick up one from a 450 on flea bay and your problems will be solved...looks cleaner, too.

I had the same exact issue. I simply made a shield out of a small piece or scrap aluminum flashing and mounted it to the same bolts that holds the resevoir. You can hardly see it and it deflects the heat perfectly. It actually looks kinda factory...which is kinda scary coming from me...LOL

This sounds like a great alternative... I wonder if they made the brake pedal slightly larger too...

I just bought a new reservoir from Yamaha I should have read this first! I would of gotten a WR450 setup ??

Yep same thing happened to me, Just replaced swing arm, linkage lower and upper shock bearings at the weekend.

Then found that i had very little brake fluid in reservoir, surprised that the back brake actualy worked.

Just been into the stealer to order a new one, £21 bargin really i was, expecting more like £30-£35.

Looks like I'm making a heat shield for it for when i fit it friday night so deff riding sunday!

Kool. You could use a aluminum can as the material. Just counter roll it flat and get a tin snip and cut it. Hammer the top crease on a vise. I think the top crease helps the heat deflection. The top crease and the rear crease makes it more ridgid too. Drill a hole...done. I run the bike pretty hard and get it hot. It really keeps the heat off the brake fluid. Best of all...you will not lose fluid and use of the rear brake. I know the rear brake does not do much, but I like having one...LOL
