If the bike lives on the street, gets lots of miles put on it, and you don't ride track days at a local kart track, 300lbs+ isn't such a big deal.  If you ride it on the highway at all, 300lbs+ is actually a nice to have.

If you ride track days or race, a sub 300lbs fire breathing converted MX'er is by far the best way to go.

It all comes down to usage and expectations.

I have a 2002 Yamaha WR426F that I purchased to make into a SM. I first made it street legal here in Colorado. I was looking for some SM 17" wheels to put on it but did not have the money at the time. So I just put some DOT dualsport 50/50 tires on it for the inspection to make street legal. Well, one year later, I am just enjoying the bike too much on the road and in the dirt to get the SM wheels. Great dualsport/semi-SM bike. Handles great on the road, I just must know the limits of the sides of the tires in the corners. And when I see a dirt road that turns into a 4X4 jeep trail that then turns into a single track trail, I can do it all. Great fun and have never looked back. I geared it a tad higher than stock for the road but the motor still has the power for the dirt trails. Put 2000 miles on it in the past 3 months and the valves have not moved when I checked them for the second time. Now I am the 3rd owner of this bike and it still runs like new with a lot of miles on her. +1 on Yamaha motors!
Here is a link to a recent ride.

Another late reply but see what you think.  I'm a motocrosser with an 09 yz 450f who bought an R6 cuz I figured I could have fun at some track days and its something new to learn.  Was having a blast until I got ridden around by a dude on a CR 450 supermoto haha and figured I'd rather be that guy.  So I'm about to pull the trigger on a KTM 500 EXC for a dual sport bike and now have to decide which one I supermoto, the KTM or the YZ?? Decisions decisions.  And I'm in So Cal so plating the YZ is out of the question but if its the way better sm bike I'd still have the KTM to DS on the street

Another way to look at it is if you toss a Sportbike on the ground it will be COSTLY to repair but if you toss a SuperMoto on the ground well you just pick it back up and goooooo :banghead: just like a Dirtbike hehe

Well luckily I dont have to get rid of the R6 and will probably keep it for the bigger tracks but the SM looked way fun in the tight stuff.  So all I need to figure out is whether to get the wheels n brakes for my YZ and strictly ride track, or get the SM stuff for the KTM I'm about to buy so it will be a street legal SM.  If the YZ is way more fun on the track than the KTM will be I'll go that route, but if the KTM will be better than I may as well have a street legal SM, hopefully I didnt just sound completely confusing
