DRZ 400S 16 Tooth Front Sprocket??

Recommended Posts

I have a 2001 DRZ 400S, with the standard 15/44 configuration. I had 14, 15 & 16 tooth front sprockets for both of my KLR 650's. I mainly switched to the 16 tooth front to lower RPM's on highway sections of my trips.

Does anyone make a 16 tooth front for a DRZ 400S? I'm planning on a 650 mile run to Moab on the slab and would like to lower the RPM's.

Any info appreciated!!

BE aware, not all 16T CS are created equally. Some fit, some do not. The Driven racing sprockets are made with a slight undersize major diameter (the diameter where the tips of the teeth are) to aid fitting. They do not contact the swingarm. Thy do just touch the rubber chain slider slightly. Some of the others on the market hit metal to metal and should not be used.

Another thing to BE AWARE of....if you allow your chain to get too loose, the chain will start eating away the case, ask me how I know. Also, my 16 Driven didn't contact the swingarm but I had to put a 1/4 inch grove on the rubber chain slider so that the gear would fit.

What mods ?

Buy a JTF434-16 front sprocket. Space it out 3mm with a big washer between the sprocket and the engine for the correct offset. Your case saver may hit the chain, but it will wear itself in.

Here is a pic of a chain derailment last week on my 16T.

Very little damage relatively speaking.

Next pic is with a new chain fitted, 24 hours later.20210113_111942.jpg

I installed a sunstar today without knowing that it would rub, but when I rode it, it rubbed so badly with the swing arm that it made a dent. Could this have serious consequences ?

A dent in what?

I have run a 16 on and off for 6 years and never found the need to space out as Tony talked about. I have trimmed some of the rubber swingarm protector and ground about 2 mm off the tips of each of the 16 teeth, also totally eliminated the sprocket cover and case saver. My theory is that with a good modern o-ring  chain, rivet master, maintained well, your more likely to get struck by lightning then break your chain.

Yeah i used to think that until a week ago too. (Note the destroyed case saver hanging down in previous pic)

The 16T I used ground the chain through my case 14 years ago, which spewed oil, because I had ditched the guard.. The 16T has a narrower boss than a factory sprocket and runs closer to the engine.

Having learnt my lesson, I have used a spacer and the case saver ever since. ?

I do like your idea of trimming the teeth ??
