In a french magazine, the CRF250 was listed with 35 HP (YZF250 has 42). This information was taken from the Honda press documents and it really worried the journalists. Of course, you can't rely on the numbers given in such documents but it's strange.

I would not believe that if I were you. I dont really trust any of the stuff that comes out super early and boisters this and that, or in this case shows a lacking. Lets just wait till it comes out :)

i would call bull sheesh on that statement. yzf 250s dont have 42 horsepower. the 302 kit doesnt even break 40. if the crf 250 wasn't close to the yzf in horsepower, they probably would not release it. they would go back to the drawing board.

Well, maybe they are going back to the drawing board, so of...

The release date for the CRF250R keeps slipping, so there must be something not quite right on the bike. :)

If it does make 35hp, I'll buy it! Heck, my YZ250F is only supposed to make around 31.

IMO, Honda never intended to release the new bike before this fall/winter. They released the information early to keep interest up, that's all. Have you seen all the ads and commercials about the new Hulk movie during the last two months? Same thing!

35 would be about right. The YZF does not make 42.

fwiw, the initial fonseca interview claimed he was pulling reed on hills in the japan national mx race. it led him to beleive the crf had more hp than reed yzf.

Is it possible to sue Honda for making us wait so long for this bike? It's borderline illegal! :) :D :D

The CRF 250 is bound to be a great bike. It would be nice to see a Horsepower & Torque comparison of the two bikes, in addition to gear ratios and weight of bike.

What is supposed to be the weight of the CRF 250? :)

Honda claims that the CRF450 makes 55HP and everyone that has tested it(magazines & Thumpertalkers) come up with 47HP. I saw a chart on the YZ250F and it was around 33HP from what I remember. So until it comes out and someone dyno's it, don't worry. Remember, Honda claims the bike weights 225lbs and it really weights about 233lbs.

Whatever the number is, Honda wont come out with something uncompetitive. There are also 2 places at which to get a horsepower reading from, the crank or the rear wheel. Manufacturers will generally give specs on crank horsepower because the number is higher. When the "world" receives it, it gets measured at the rear wheel via a rolling dyno. Honda doesnt like to lose so when it comes out I am sure the homework will have been done! Might not dominate but it will compete.

Ardfarkl, was that to my statement? About the uncompetitiveness? Because I wasnt implying that at all. I think when they (Honda) are ready to enter the fray, they will be ready! I dont look for dominance but a battle will surely be started! All I know is the bigger the war between the manufacturers the better the bikes I can get. That is good for us whichever brand you ride. I think the racing organizations need to drop the minimum weights allowed to what ever they can achieve. No Holds Barred! :D Berylium sidecovers and cases maybe? :)

One rumor that i heard (and i find this to be beleiveable) is that the crf250 made about 45 HP and honda took it back to the board to make it make less power too let the competition come out first.

35 ponies does sound right in the area for a 250cc thumper mx bike. the 250f makes 37 tops box stock.

i'm even considering skipping the '04 crf, keeping my Katoom 450 and getting the new Honda 250.
