ive got my eye on an 82 yz 490, im trying to sell my 79 yz 250 project to fund it. the bike seems in good shape, he says its mint, but i havent seen it yet. ive read some other threads about the 490 and it seems like a good choice. im really excited, have wanted one since i was a wee lad.

Be careful on that beast. I had an '83 YZ490, I busted my butt on that thing a few times. Really crazy top end power, not bad on the bottom end either. I had friends that rode it once. They never wanted to sit on it again crying that it was just too much and did wheelies without warning. I really had some great fun on that bike but it just about wore me out trying to start it sometimes. I miss that thing and still wish I had it, but its getting harder to find places to ride them.

sorry to hear that amigo, a real letdown . legend has it that the 465 comes with less problems. i have one...... wow. i would have just as easily took a 490 if i had came across one though. i love these nasty bastards, modern stuff is great but the oldies come with that extra grin factor. KEEP SEARCHING.

Don't be sad......I'd rather have the 79 250. My old 83 yz490 ranks #1 of all the bikes iv'e owned (about 42) as being the worst POS!What a dreadful machine.

I had a 82 YZ 490, and it's rated as my all time worst bike as well. Oddly enough, I'd love to find a 84 YZ 490 to race around here in the Ultima class. The 82 was heavy, impossible to jet, poor handling and had terrible rear suspension that can't be fixed. I ended up buying a 82 CR480R. There are several nice watercooled bikes that are great for racing in the Ultima class around here, but for me, a vintage shouldn't be watercooled. So for this class, it pretty much means open class. I really wanted a 83 CR 480R or a 84 YZ 490, then a RM 500, 84 YZ 250 (watercooled, but a great race bike for this class), the 82 CR480R was about 6th on my list, but I have been happy with it. The 82 YZ490 was not even under consideration and I saw adds for them all the time.

Bummer about the bike being sold. Double bummer about selling your 250 also. Good luck finding what you want!

Did you know that the top 10 worst bikes of all times
It says on #3 or #2 ----Any year YZ490, #1 is Any 3-wheeler
#3 or #4 was the TM400 Suzuki--nickname the widowmaker
Does that tell you how good the 490 was

they were hard as heck to jet and the trany was crap, and they handled like heck to

yes i know they were not the best bikes. but i just wanted that feeling again... you know the rush. i used to get it with the yz 250. when i got my first yz 250 i was in awe; and it was the only one in town, so i felt very proud also.
im still on the look out, but 500s arent very common around here.

Actually it was #4, three wheelers were #2. #1 was the TM400 which I've never seen in person but have heard some wicked stories about.

Super Hunky's Top 10 List strikes again.

Maybe the 1982 YZ-490J was a crummy bike, but the 1987 YZ-490T I owned was just fine.

Back in the mid '90s a buddy of mine did a frame up resto-mod on an '82, and by all accounts, it was a great bike for him. It was used as a woods bike. Never left him stranded and was fast as heck.
It would lift the front end in all 4 gears.

I race a 1984 YZ 490 in the ultima 500 class at ahrma events. It's competitive with everything in the class. CR 480's, RM 465/500's, etc. The 1983 was better than the 1982 model and the 84 was better than the 83 model. I've got an Ohlins shock on mine along with cartridge emulators in the forks. Use the jetting specs off the YZ490 group on Yahoo and run 110 race gas. The bike does not ping and carburetes cleanly. I'm usually a 250 only guy, but I'm slowly coming around to this bike...

Hey: Just decided to sell my 81 YZ465. Love it but I have gone to the dark side (electric start). It's complete with spares. New fork seals, good sprockets and tires. I live near some killer hills (Carnegie in CA) and it's climbed anything I had the nerve to point it at. Message me for pics and more detail.
