Wipe Out Rule #1

Recommended Posts

A riding buddy of mine is famous for wrecks. Everyone fights to follow him to see the carnage.

He wrecked BAD one day into a tree, down a cliff etc...

Another buddy stopped and ran down the hill. He was face down with no movement. He thought the worst for our wreck stricken compadre'. He said, " You alright?" and for my wipe out rule, it is his resonse... "I'm just collecting my thoughts!"

I did an unplaned stoppie a couple of years ago on the pavement on my XR600.... those XR's are really heavy , when their laying on top of you.

and another thing....tree's can be soooooooo unforgiving. ?

I usually loose count. Now I know why everybody wants me to lead. I wear a chest protector, elbow guards, the best knee guards I can afford, always new pants(I usually trash a pair every couple rides),new gloves (same reason),new helmet every summer (same reason),heavily armored boots, and a back brace/kidney belt. Just to trail ride. Pain doesn't bother me, it's the time off from work that gets me in dutch with the wife. "you never find the edge of the envelope till you fall off it". My friends usually don't laugh untill they know I'm O.K. They laugh alot. I chopped off a toe once, they didn't laugh then (well, some did), some got kinda pale though. By the way, ? Is this "monkey butt"?

Oh, and I forgot. In order for the judges to give you a score after the wipe-out, you must STICK THE LANDING, like a gymnast coming off the parallel bars. Feet together, arms up and over your head. Even if you don't land that way you have to get up and do the pose. No stick=no score. We take our crashes very seriously. So far I have the best score. Come to think of it, I don't know if that's good or bad. ?

My motto has always been "If you don't crash at least once on every ride, your not trying hard enough".

IMO a crash is a hard thing to describe. Its kinda like how big is big or how hot is hot.

I've got buds who've eaten it and then said "Oh that ain't no crash, a crash is when you hurt yourself"

I've always considered tumbles, cartwheels or faceplants as crashes and anything less as tipovers.

As I am replying to this I am recovering from multiple broken ribs and a collapsed lung! :D I love riding but hate being hurt. Now, I can't ride for 6 weeks! :D

What kind of armor protects the ribs best? I have broken my ribs so many times I am starting to get concerned. Also, just an observation. If I ride more aggressively I tend not to crash as much. When I am just cruising I usually wind up mangling myself on some stupid low speed crash! I don't know. I can't figure it out. ?

I guess from now on I'll just ride faster! :D

I too ride much better and crash less if I'm riding aggressively. When I slow down, I tend to eat it a lot easier. I think it has something to do with the gyroscopic effect of the wheels. When you go fast this plays a big part, slow down and it goes away.

I used to work at a company where I designed mining equipment. Whenever I'd wreck, I'd just use the excuse that I needed to take soil samples for a project at work. ?

You are correct Sir!! Not that I am FAST , but I have experienced the same when I get behind a pokey rider.

A couple weeks ago I was just in one of those moods. I really didn't want to ride fast at all. Looking up the hillside for deer, dickin' around etc... There is a favorite section of trail everyone loves to just rail up. I was coming down that at a snails pace and was dumbfounded over the amount of obsticles. Rocks, tighter than percieved trees, ruts etc... I was amazed how fast we go through that stuff. All reaction I guess.

(But wear all the protective gear you can afford.)

Agreed, my mantras:

When trying to explain the benefits of wearing all the

protective gear you get get on:

"Whatever isn't covered in plastic, WILL get FU"

When trying to tell someone "how" to crash:

"Whatever gets stuck out gets snapped off"

On the slow=crash.. simple, you're timing is way off if you

don't ride a comfortable pace. Stuff you normally fly over

becomes direction diverting obstacles...

Believe a biologyst. That is called Adrenaline. The best drug in the world: Instant enhancing effect on all your senses and muscles at really low circulating concentrations! ? resulting in better balance (among many other effects)

It looks to me you are almost asleep while you cruise :D

#1. Its not a wipeout unless you end up at least 10 feet from the bike and have to lay there a minum of 20seconds, oh and there has to be spectators.

#2. Oh and no points unless you stick the landing by landing on your feet and your bike has to stick the landing by sticking upside down.

I have done #1. to many times and have come close to #2. a couple.
