I'm about to replace my clutch plates with fresh ones(steel and fiber). Is it crucial to soak them before hand? If so for how long? I hear of people letting them soak for days! Is this absolutely necessary? Seems like overkill to me.

I don't think days is necessary, a few hours should be good enough, move them around every now and then to get a good soaking, and viola.
