Oil on Timing Plugs?

Just bought a moderately used 1999 YZ400F, my first Yami and first racing-style thumper. I removed the plastic timing plugs from the left engine cover and there is oil all over the inside. Is this normal? Also, which side has the "generator" and it is supposed to be bathed in oil?

Yep, normal. The left side has the stator and rotor (generator), and the oil flows around those items. Not a matter of concern, just don't run the engine with those plugs removed.

That oil lubes the left main and balancer shaft bearings.
