Shipping a DRZ Motor the Easy way

Having to ship a DRZ motor does not have to be hard.. The following is a simple solution to what can be a complex problem. The best part is, this is so easy, you can send this reference to a distant seller to help them package your new motor for shipment to you, or use it your self to send a motor off for work.

The cooler idea was given to us by Eddie Sisneros of Sisneros Speed Works (SSW) in Denver Colorado.

Eddie and many others have used this shipping method with great success.
This is of course not the only way to do this, you can build a crate

a different plastic box, encase the motor in foam and cover with cardbaord...many ways to the same end.. This is just one way that is simple, quick, and has proving to work.

So follow along and see if it will work for you.
[BREAK=The Set up, what you'll need]

The main ingredient is a Igloo cooler, the 60 quart "Ice Cube" is a perfect sized fit, and even comes with a handle.

Available from most any Target, Walmart, or online E retailer.

  • Also required will be some packing materials to support the motor in the cooler.
  •
I have my method, which is to use 6 small garbage bags and a can of expanding foam. Others have used everything from rags, to wadded up new paper or pieces of Styrofoam from other packages.
What ever you use, pack the motor i tight to it can not flop around.
• Strapping tape, or quality 100mph tape to secure the container lid
[BREAK=Packing it all up]

Once you have the motor out, make sure it is empty of fluids.. drain as much oil and coolant as you can from the motor before packaging. Shippers will have a real problem with liquids leaking from the container in transit.

After draining all fluids, double bag the motor in heavy duty contractor garbage bags.

Place a piece of cardboard at the bottom of the cooler, or if your doing the bag & expanding foam,, this is your 1st bag.. fill to about 2in.. let stand for 30 sec or so, then set the motor into the cooler on the bag of foam.

Once the motor is in the cooler on your base of choice, fill the remaining voids with your packing meterial...

Again, if your using the foam and bag deal.. place a bag on one side, fill with a some foam, do the same on the opposite side, repeat from the remaining to cooler sides... If the foam comes up too high,, you can easily cut is off with a knife or hand saw.

Lastly is the top.. place a heavy piece of cardboard, hunk of Styrofoam, or the last bag and foam on top, close the lid and your almost done.

Use your strapping tape or 100mph tape to secure the lid. Recommend making complete turn around the container, top to bottom, middle, and on each side. Then 90deg to those straps, top and bottom to secure the main strappings.

Place your shipping label on the top.
And put one or more "this direction UP" labels on the cooler sides.

No guarantee it'll stay that way in all shipping hands,,, but no worries, you packed it well.

Yes it's over kill... but I've never had a lid come off, or one of my packages break open.. so,,, to me, it's worth the extra effort.

The complete package will weigh about 98 pounds. Fedex and UPS will take this package with no issues.

Suggest you insure the package for $1500 or so
