I just bought a '99 400 with vry little time on it. After buying it, I have read and heard about "problems" with the clutch. If anyone could fill me in on any of these clutch problems, or anything else I should look for, I would greatly appreciate it. I am planning on spending alot of money to make it an enduro/HS bike, so anything I could do to bulletproof it, I want to do now. Also, any tips on gearing for tight woods and rocks would help out. Thanks in advance!

You shouldn't have any problems with the '99 400 clutch. The problems were with the 00 426's, where the clutch baskets were breaking. Yamaha changed the basket for 00 and in doing so, built in a flaw. So, don't worry, you should be fine.
