KX250DE00xxxx Engine ID What year?

I've searched the forum for this Engine ID but have been unable to figure out what year this is from.
Any ideas?

KDX250 D was made from 1991 - 1994. If it's a water cooled kdx250 you can bet that it's a D. Doesn't much matter beyond that since all 4 year models were the same.

I believe it's somewhere between 85-87 but I guess I'll have to go to the bike shop and buy something :ride:

Seems to me the first letter after "KX250" is the model of that year. So that should fill in some of those blanks. i.e. 94-98 are all KX250KE....

my Bike is a 98 kx250. it has an engine vin #KX250KE01xxxx witch is the code for a 97 model.

the vin on the frame leads me to believe that the bike is a very early model 98 kx250. could some of the case castings rolled over into production from the previous year?

I was told my bike was a 2002, boguht new fork springs and they wouldn't fit in the bike, ran the Frames VIN number and found the frame was a 2001, then i found my motor's VIN which was a KX250LE02 motor. . . which is not a 2001 (KX250LE01****) or a 2002 (KX250LE06****) or any of the other motor's on the list of kawasaki motors. I suspect mines a chineese knock off. . .? :smirk:

The LE02 is the limited-edition HiPo version of the '01 KX250. It was sold only in very limited quantities, and only to licensed pedigreed racers. You actually had to show your racing resume and get approved to purchase this model, as it was Kawasaki's "450F killer" and had a very special engine that put out more than 52 hp to the standard KX250's 44 hp. Most people don't know about these "limited edition" models that Kawasaki sold for several years.

Not really, but it did sound good, right? B)

Someone actually responded to my thread and said that the cylinder because it was the 1938 model number it was a 2001, but my crankcase numbers still don't match with anything i have seen so you did have me going.

my 2002 has the 1959,look at the linkage pivot the 2002 only had a 1301 on it and the arms were specific for that year too.Maybe you have a frankinbike.

That would be a normal situation. Unless you purchased the bike off the showroom floor, you have no idea who swapped what at what point. The important thing is your cylinder ID is correct. For 98 it's marked "1851" on the left side near the reed cage.

Yeah, so they would never give you a 97 cylinder no matter how early your VIN is. So you have early cases and the proper cylinder.

my engine code is KX250LE03XXX its supposed to be an 02 model,it has the 02 cylinder but I don't see this code in the list.

Did you ever find anything out....I have the same thing with my bike, frame says its 01 but engine code is kx250le021812

There seems to be alot of confusion on these engine numbers. It's really pretty simple.

"KX250" is the marketing name for the bike

The next letter designates the model series of that engine. Refer to post #5. K-Models were 94-98, L models were 99-02, etc. so sticking with the K series, a 95 KX250 would be a KX250-K. Now to seperate that 95 bike from a 94, 96, 97 or 98 you need another number...2. so the proper name for a 95 KX250 is KX250-K2. All the engine cases produced for Kx250's between 94 and 98 were "KX250K........"

I believe the next letter "E" refers to it being an Engine. I could be wrong but I've seen the letter E used for that on many different model Kawasakis.

The next series of numbers is the order they were produced. So the first engine off the line in 94 was: KX250KE000001. It has nothing to do with a part number or anything, even if the cases changed part numbers mid-series, say in 96, they are still K-Models. So the engine numbers are going to start the same and be in sequence.

Now, I don't know if a dealership can provide a list separating the sequenced numbers into part numbers (that would be awesome). But they may be able to do it. I'm assuming lower number cases in a model series would be the first year. So a 94 would be something like: KX250KE000001 thru 0005000; then 95 would start at 0005001 or something like that.

A dealership should have that breakdown.

That makes alot of sence...... My 01 has a code of le021812, so does that mean its the 11,812th bike made in 01?

You mean the 21,812 bike? No. I think the VIN refers to the complete bike sequence, not the engine case number. Besides that, like I said earlier, since your 01 is 2 years after the first "L-MODEL" rolled off the assembly line, you have the 21,812 engine in the L-Model series. So someone with 12,750 might be riding a 2000 KX250 and someone with engine number 7,634 might be riding a 99 KX250. and someone with 32,967 might be on a 02.

The only easy definite answer is the first letter (model designation D, E, H, J, K, L, etc) will give you the year range of the cases.

Back to the case number vs. VIN.

Getting to know the Z1 Kaws, I found out that very early models had "matching number" engine/frames. During production, Kawasaki would pull some cases out of the line for rebuilds, warranty, etc. Because of that, the numbers never matched after the first 2000-ish produced bikes. It's acceptible to have an engine and frame within 200-250 difference, but anything over that would be considered "non-matching numbers"

I think that carries to these bikes too. My 94 KX250 has engine number 400 and frame 412. Since my 94 is the first year of the K-Model series it will have a low number. A 1998 KX250, the last year of the K models, will have a much higher sequence number for the cases and the frame number will be waaay off from the case number.
