CR500 Vs. Street Bike

It may not be possible to accurately predict this question but I was just wondering what you guys think? How do you think a CR500 (1987) would stand in a drag race against a middle size stock street bike (600cc-750cc)? A few buddies and I were wondering what you guys think may be the outcome. Of course the street bike would eventually kill the CR5, but in a short race what do you think? :ride:

Thats a tough one, the street bike will only have to shift once or twice, the cr probably can't keep the front wheel down.

Thats what I was thinking.... I think the CR5 can win... but keeping the front end down would be the hardest part. The power to weight ratio for the CR is amazing though...

I think it won't prove to be a good showing for the 500. That is what crotch rockets are made for; racing on the street. If a CR 500 or any dirt bike was meant to drag race, everyone would do it to prove whose bike is better. (like cars and street bikes)

And slide the forks up in the triple clamp 3-4".

Somewhere on the web is a blog of a guy that made a bunch of changes to an 86-87 cr 500 and drag raced it.

Some of the new R6 and cbr600rr are crazy fast.

Haha I think once I get my bike working I may run against my buddy with an 06 gsxr6. I'll let you guys know what the outcome is. Probably not good for the CR5 though.

I recall an old Dirt Bike magazine (mid-80s, I think) where they took a new CR500 and a fresh VFR500 Interceptor (the 4-cylinder V-4) of the same model year and took them out to the local drag strip. Knobbies and all, the CR smoked the Interceptor every time. By a lot. They couldn't do anything to make it lose. They tossed on a street rear tire and predictably, the margin of CR500 victory was even greater. Newer 600s are significantly quicker, but I bet it would still be a close race. I'm guessing the CR might pull them up to the 1/8th mile marker, but a modern 600 would walk away on the big end. Power-to-weight rules, though - with some gearing changes, a good tire and a professional rider, I bet it could be really close.

I remember that article. The 1985 cr500 was running 12 second 1/4 miles right out of the crate with just a street tire added to it for traction. The new 600's run high 10's so I wouldn't expect it to be able to beat one, now if you were running an 1/8 mile race, it may be different. The new 600 will get the CR500 on the back end of the 1/4 mile race.

i had a k5 last summer and i was wondering if anyone ever made a drag bike out of a 500 2t ..?? as i have been around drag racing my whole life (cars) i always thought of having an extended swing arm lowered kx or cr 500 with a nice air shifter/ dial a launch set up and see what i could do with it? i was wondering what some of the best 1/4 mile or 1/8 mile times were out of a 500 2t ..??? im sure the right rider plus gearing and set up this could make one hell of a budget bracket racer ...id love to see someone have a nice high 10 second / consistant bike out of a dirt bike ... that would be something!!

i would think lowering/extended swing arm.. street tires , gearing/ motor set up/ air shifter/ wheelie bars and the right motor work done plus a seasoned rider i would think a high 11 second pass wouldnt be impossible?? maybe even faster??

The CR500 has a power-to-weight ratio of about 4.3, while an R6 has a power-to-weight ratio of about 3.8. Factor in the difficulty of launching the CR due to the short wheelbase, tall height, and short gearing, and the limited rev range of the CR (7k versus 14.5k for the R6) and the CR will be slaughtered.

I will catch some smack for this but back in the day Cycle world ran one against a Interceptor 500. I can't quite remeber what the final was but the CR topped out so quick it had to run wide open for most of the run which gave the 500 time to catch it. I had a Cr500 and wouldn't of hesitated to run anything for a block or so but a 1/4 mile is a long run on a stock CR500. Of course this was a stock vrs stock bike. You may be able to find it in the archive on CW site.?
Anyway, I'd run a on a gixxer 600 against a CR500 for titles but I want the gixxer under me.

I thought my modded CR250 was bad.
My friends old Ninja blew by w/ease.

The street bike gearing is tall and he can pull me in 1st, while I'm already in 3rd.....no contest.
