Use the #3 in the cartridges, and #5 in the outer chambers.

A good second is Amsoil Shock therapy.

most of the timeI agree with you and you have a ton of great info on all matters.But on smart performance oil I do not like it.At least on Showa suspension.i am fully skilled with showa suspension and have used all types of suspension fluids and i have great results with honds fluids .they are fantastic.amsoil makes great motor oil but thier suspension oil is not that good .

Not that good? Could you be anymore scientific? Also, The OP is using KYB forks.... so I guess your not fully skilled with those? Not to bash but your post here needs some clarity and explanation.

Yamaha S1.It is expensive but works excellent. I have gone back and forth with S1 and Smartperformance. I only ride motocross. I find the S1 more consistent for the duration of moto then the Smartperformance. Just my observation.

right !!!! So on kyb I can not say the same thing as showa.It may work great on the kyb and it is all up to personal preference.the amsoil just plain sucked in my opinion.I do like amsoil in general.So iam not a amsoil hater.

I know alot of people love Smart Oil. I do not.

I'am not a scientist and do not claim it.

I do know Honda fork oil is great stuff.It holds up well and has great action.

S1 not particularly durable, and is very expensive.

I run for over 2 hours at a time in a typical desert scrambles, and have had no issues with fade or inconsistent suspension operation. It's every bit as good at the end of the race as at the start. I have run it with both stock suspension and the full SMART Performance treatment, and it worked fine both ways. One of the things that's different about it is that it absorbs energy and converts it to heat more readily than conventional fluids. This can lead to a higher level of internal air pressure in the fork much sooner than usual. If you warm the suspension up for 15 minutes or so, then vent them, the build up of pressure is considerably less after that.

The KYB oil is the Yamaha oil, and it is both expensive and short lived.

The reason I recommend pursuing this topic in the suspension forum is because over there, you will get more opinions from the several professional suspension builders who hang out there, and not just "I used this and it worked OK".

Suspension oil breaks down into 3 major groups, as I see it:

  • Pricey OEM stuff that works well, but doesn't last
  • Premium aftermarket products such as Amsoil, Maxima, and Motorex, that work well in a broad range of applications, and do hold up well
  • 215.VM2.K5, an unconventional, non-Newtonian fluid representing a different approach, and a significant break from the "same old stuff".

Ok, Hijack time, are you able to find time to warm up your suspension properly on all of your scramble events? I am a little worried about having to do this at most of my events where my warm-up time is short.
