Dont buy the dr.d exhaust 06-09 yz450f

Recommended Posts

:eek:This exhaust system for the yz450f 06-09 is poorly engineered.I bought the titanium full system for my yz450f 09 and found that the header pipe blocks the oil filter cover. So when you go to do a oil change you have to re-move the header to get to the oil filter. After the oil-change is done you will also have to remove the rest of the exhaust system to get the header to seat properly.:bonk::banghead:Ive replaced the DR>D system with a FMF 4.1 system with the megabomb header:banana:It works much better (more bottom end power-and mid)and they put thought into the way it works with the rest of the bike.:banghead:? NO MORE PROBLEM.I also contacted DUBACH RACING and they wouldnt listen to what i had to say.:foul:If your looking for a new exhaust system for the yz450f 06-09 go with the FMF excellent power, engineering and customer support!Lets face it you shouldnt have to re-move the header to do a simple oil change.

Hate to be an ass about this.. but.... ur problem has been noted in many dr.d threads.. and to be honest it is not a problem at all. and the reason why the headpipe covers the oil pump is bring the weight of the exhaust sytem down to lower the center of gravity.. also allows the use of the dr.d rad lowering kit..

and what i mean by its not a problem is that all u need to do is install a peice of threaded rod and a bolt.. this will allow u to remove the oil filter cover without having to remove the header.. and is what the majority do..

and btw i have a pc ti4 so im not defending dr.d because i have one of the systems..

Loosening up and re-tightening the header will wear out the exhaust gasket quick. That is stupid to build an exhaust like that. People already put off oil changes longer than they should, now they have more reasons not to do it.

If the exhaust was giving you a huge increase in power it may be worth it, but obviously an exhaust that doesn't interfere can be made just as powerful.

The lowering the weight issue is not a good argument. The bike was built around that idea and a ti header weighs almost nothing. A clump of mud on your fender weighs twice as much as a header does.

The only reason I can think of is that they were rushing a system out the door so they had something when the new bike came out.

doug dubach has been with yamaha for well over 10 years.. the center of gravity comment was to in refrence to the canaster.. the longer headpipe not only improves bottom but moves the canister closer to the center of the bike..

take a look at the 08-09 450s.. y do u think the muffler is so damn small. yamaha used the smallest can they could to allow the bike to be more centered..

Huh............guess I got lucky, hasn't been a problem for me.

Granted, it's close, but after I set the height of the header to clear and held it there while tightening the flange bolts, I've been able to get to the oil cover bolt just fine. :banghead:

sorry to say that this is not new news. The DRD is basically a stock system with spark arrestor.

NOT. The performance improvement on my '08 was pretty dramatic when I went with the Dr. D. The craftmanship is great as well as customer service.

As for the OP's problem - play around with the angle of the header when you install it. Mine is set up so that I don't have to do anything to it to get the oil filter cover off. Just need to loosen the other two bolts first then the long one, and it barely clears the header.

The header could have been made to clear the top filter bolt better and still accommodate the radiator lowering kit (which is the real reason the header dips that much), that much I grant you. But I completely disagree with the statement that it's "basically a stock system with spark arrestor", or that the interference is a valid reason not to buy the pipe. It's old news, as already pointed out, for one thing.

For another, the performance gain is worth the price, relative to other pipes.

The problem can be dealt with either by using a stud and nut, as mentioned, which is what I do, or by using a solid copper exhaust gasket, which you can cheaply make for yourself out of a piece of 8 gauge bare copper ground wire. The secondary advantage of doing that is that the OEM gasket actually hangs out into the port and obstructs it slightly, whereas the copper wire doesn't.

It's really not such a big deal to loosen the outer header nut and pull the header out of the way, and with stud, you don't need to do that, either. Actually, the stock headers used to do the same thing to an even greater extent than the DRD. All in all, yes, it's a little annoying, and yes, it didn't really have to be that way, but it's not enough, IMO, to reject it.

I have an 07 with the DRD stainless system and the long bolt just clears the pipe without having to loosen the header pipe nuts. Maybe I am just on the lucky side of the tolerance stack. I use a ball end allen head socket on the long bolt and am able to torque the bolt without any interference issues. The difference in power over the stock pipe is worth it.

Your right its not really a big deal, just annoying.

Ill sell you my Dr,d system and rad lowering kit if you want to re-live that sweet ride.Im done with the scrap metal.

a design flaw and scrap metal eh?

Sorry dude no offense but you are just plain lazy...it takes all of 30 extra sec's to loosen the header....and it only needs to be loosened slightly to get the oil filter bolt out.

No wonder no one at DRD would give you the time of day. :banghead:

My White Bros low boy pipe also is the same but I figured out how to remove the top oil filter bolt w/o loosening the header. .....use a allenhead wrench on the top bolt to loosen it, remove the other bolts first and wiggle the top bolt out np....
