09 yz 450 woods gearing

Recommended Posts

I have a 51 tooth in the rear and a flywheel weight. I ride a lot of really technical, tight trails, so I still have to clutch it a lot to keep it from stalling, but the sprocket and FWW help it lug better. Adding a Rekluse would make it perfect. I would suggest a good O-ring or X-ring chaing. The stocker is junk and will stretch every ride.

I have been racing an '08 450F in a scramble series for a few years. I love the set up I have been using to date. 51T rear, stock front and Rekluse Z start pro clutch. I run the hard / hard setting because I like the down low grunt with little slip for when I moto. However, the trick for me has been the use of the MSD adjustable ignition box. 9 different pre programmed settings, 0 being stock and 9 being the most aggressive. HUGE difference in throttle response between 0 and 9. For woods racing I raced on setting 6 in most slick conditions with great results. Very tacky and I would run 7-9. I also ran and DRD Pipe which helped with the low to mid power so I could pretty much run 3 gear most everywhere. This was key for me, as it helped to keep the suspension unloaded in the tree roots, rocks and higher speed stuff. Worked extremely well for me.

I was just working on installing new chain and sprockets today. Mine is an '06. I went with 53 rear. That way, I just put on a 14t front for MX, basically stock gearing. I was going to do the same, but many guys here on TT said to stay away from the 12t front, the small diameter strains the chain and will wear out the swingarm slider faster. 53/13 for woods, 53/14 for MX, haven't ridden it yet. I also got the GYT-R solid chain guide, similair to a TM Desginworks, and DID X-ring chain. I Highly recomend the Dirt Tricks Ironman sprocket, it's lasts forever! Good luck!

oh by the way my bike is not a 450 but a 426 if that makes a lot of dif?

It does because the internal gear ratios have changed. Even though the 06+ 450 has a lower final gear ratio (13/49) it works out to be exactly the same as the 14/49 that was stock on the 426.

Probably depends on your woods, and how fast you ride them. 13/49 is stock, correct? I dropped to a 13/50, and now a 13/52 and I love it. Rarely stall even with the stock flywheel.

When you installed the 52 I assume you had to install a longer chain correct? What I really want to know is how much wear did the chain guide get when you went to the larger sprocket?
