conversion 03 to 06

I have a 03 yz450f and i was wondering if i got a 06 yz450f frame, and like body like gas tank and plastic. Could i just swap out like suspension and engine from my 03, and have it all bolt right on and be all set? Thanks

03-05 or 03-06? your title and post are different. the oil runs through the frame on the 03 and the 06 doesn't. you would have to figure that out, but i dont see why it couldn't be done. Why not just sell it and buy a 06+

ya i have a 03 yz450f and id like to drop engine and all its components into the 06 frame. im not to sure if it would work. the 03's oil was held in the frame. and the 06's wasnt. so im not sure if there is anyway around that or not. id just get an 06 but i dont have that much money right now and i have a 03 that runs perfect...plus id really like a fun winter project

im not sure about with the 450's. but over the summer i swapped my 05 y250f motor nd everything into an 07 frame. bolted right in the frame with the 07 mounting hardware. i needed frame, subframe, airbox, plastic, seat, gas tank, radiators, also needed oil tank(on the 250f's its external idk about the 450f's) then i got 07 exhaust to top it off when i rebuilt my motor last month. like i said tho, idk if it will work with the 450f's or not, im curious to find out.

im not sure if the oil tank is external either...i guess ill find that out..id really like to do this tho

For practical purposes, the answer is no. By the time you go through all the BS involved in making the swap, which will include either an external oil tank or an ill-advised wet sump kit, you could very easily just go buy an '06 and sell your '03 for $1.5-2K or so. It's not a simple bolt-in.

its a fun project i think. i like tinkering. my bike ran great until i stripped it down and did the rebuild haha. now i cant get my jetting right at all. im hopin its the below freezing weather! nice thing is, if you do the project and swap motors. go through ebay and keep an eye on used aftermarket parts, like triple clamps, exhaust systems, bigger footpegs, radiators, ect.

ya i like tinkering to. itd give me and my buddy something to do all winter. and id have a sickk bike after. like i love the power of my 03 and i loveee the looks of the 06-08's. and i also heard that the power was refined after 05 to be more useable. i want all the power i can get

"I heard...". If I had a dollar.... :moon:

The '05 was remapped, and was more civilized but also slower. The '06 was the real refinement. It FELT smoother and easier to manage, but I owned both an '03 and an '06 at the same time, and trust me, my friend, the '06 is NOT the slower of the two.

what is the power on the 06 like compared to the 03?

Like a great big electric motor that doesn't know when to quit. Whereas the '03 explodes to life immediately and flattens out toward the high end, the '06 builds in a smooth, linear manner through the middle and up. The '06 also shows an average of 2.5 more peak HP.

I just went from an 04 which is similar to your 03 and now I have an 08 overall the motor feels more linear and pulls WAY harder up on top. To me 03's and 4's sign off early up top. The difference overall is fairly minor though IMHO the motor feels pretty similar to my 04 just pulls further on the top end. When I rode my 04 I was constantly bouncing off the revlimiter and I had it geared high 14/47. My 08 I don't know that I have need to hit the rev limiter as it makes better power.

ya i defiently notice what ur talking about. id love to get a newer bike like 08 or newer. but i just dont have that sort of money right now. i thought switching all this might have been a easier cheaper way. but now it doesnt seem quite so cheap.

Definately not cheaper. You will never get out of it what you put into it either. 4 strokes are an expensive addiction like Heroin. . .

It'd be difficult to mount a dry-sump engine in the wet-sump frame. Where would the oil go? There's no oil tank mounting provisions on the '06 450 frame.
Is there a wet-sump conversion for the earlier 450s? Are the mounts in the same places on both engines? Didn't the cylinder angle change at one point?:moon:

To be perfectly clear on the subject, the '06 and later YZ450, including the 2010, is a DRY sump engine. The oil "tank" is integrated into the engine assembly, but it is still a true dry sump, with two oil pumps, and the whole thing.

There is a wet sump conversion for the '03'-'05 models, but it reduces the already small amount of oil carried by the engine, and should be regarded as a race only option. I don't recommend it.
