I sat on the 2010 YZ450F today! (WHITE)

Recommended Posts

This is the bike that Matthews Fun Machines wants $9080 OTD! The first thing I noticed while sitting on it was how the radiator shrouds are so much different. Seemed wider and curled in towards the forks. I must say that two things were running through mind. #1 Dude I would be the man with this bike out at the track and how much fun it would be riding it. #2 How freaking expensive the bike was, and after sitting on it, it made my decision not to buy more concrete. I just didn't see spending $3500 more on a 2010 then I will be paying on my white 09 when I pick it up Saturday. The value just isn't there with 2010. I have been riding for a long time and this is just my observation. Good luck:busted::banghead:

I made the same decision about a month ago Wes. I got a leftover new 08 for $5500 otd at a local dealer near my house. I love my new bike and in a few years when the new design is perfected I will buy a 2012.

I believe the 2010 will be like the 06 aluminum frame that didn't turn. 09 was so much better. I believe Yamaha will address the weight issue, the abrupt power issue at throttle crack and flimsy plastic on the shrouds. It is hard to imagine, but the 2011 and 2012 will be far superior to the 2010.

My 2cents that most will not like to hear....

I think the bike is priced way too high for a first year attempt (and the more I study the 2010 bike..unfortunately the less I like it - I already am looking forward to what 2011 corrects)and that ultimately over 50% of likely Yami Centric buyers will follow your same experience Wes.....even probably jumping to Red or Green......to try something different...

The shocker that every buyer will have that purchases a 2010 Yami over MRSP will be what the depreciation reality is before the end of yr 1 -end of yr 2, and ultimately what the market value will be after 12-24mos.....it will really kill anyone that has not paid off the bike before yr 1 that finances it. (A really bad decision IMHO)

I applaud Yami trying to revolutionize the MX bike....it has a lot of really cool features but I agree with MXA - it is like a science project on steroids that had too many different groups attempting new ideas that just fell short of integrating into a complete bike....

AirFilter design - is a cluster #$%# Have fun swapping filters

It does not breathe - not enough air

the vibration is ridiculous - what happened to the counter balancer?

the gearbox needs help too gappy

EFI needs help

Starting at TDC nuf said..needs attn

Sorry folks I luv Yami but this bike needs at least another year of R&D and testing......

I said the same thing about the 09 CRF

unlike the 06 which gave a complete bike with a lot less flaws...

You should probably wait until 2015 - in case the 2011 has flaws that they miss in 2012. But be careful if you buy the 2015 the 2017 might be better.

  1. The air filter setup isn't anywhere near as bad as made out, and only requires the removal of a couple of extra bolts compared to the standard pattern. Once exposed, the filter is right out in the open, and the truth is that the whole thing can be accomplished in about he same amount of time as with the old design, and without smearing dirt and oil on the frame. If there is a cluster foxtrot aspect to it, I'm afraid I missed it. The complaint reminds me of working with guys who would spend 15 minutes cursing and working around something they could have unbolted and moved in 3.
  2. Has anyone determined that the bike is air starved by actually testing anything, or is that just what Jody thinks? Who out there seriously believes that the engineers would put all this work int the bike and set it up with an inadequate air supply? There are two air inlets into the filter, both of which are more than twice the size of the throttle bore. I'm willing to bet there's not a problem there at all.
  3. The vibration is something we should wait and see about. I've heard complaints that an occasional '06 or '08 vibrates badly, when we know that by far most of them are remarkably smooth. Could have been just that unit. Current owners, what do you have to say on that subject?
  4. The gearbox is the exact same set of gear ratios that the '06-'09 had, and MXA thought it was pure heaven. Now all of a sudden there's a problem?
  5. Not very specific.
  6. When you had your 426, you probably used to say that you could start it first or second kick every time, and the whole, elaborate drill was no big deal. Now, just because you're supposed to push the engine up against compression (NOT TDC), it's too much trouble or something. I start my '06 like that almost all the time anyway.

If those are the comments MXA came up with, it sounds like somebody was missing their caffeine fix when they went to work that day.

As usual Gray racer applies logic & a calm approach. On my 2010 it takes less than 2 minutes to change out the filter. yes there was a learning curve. The trans comment I never noticed any odd spacing. The thing about gearing it's never perfect for every part of track anyway. The efi.I have the tuner I will change it around when I feel it nessary. The vibration. I think it is from the loud intake noise . Like when you put a air intake on your car/truck Usually when MXA likes it, I dont. I coming off an 09 yz450 f ..Jeff

yea the air filter is a easy task. i got my makita impact 3/8s takes me a total if i already have a pre oiled rdy to go about 30 secs to change it. i think its easy compared to my 06 cuase theres no stupid ass sub in my way and no long ass wing nut just a clamp. and starting is easy you can come to my house and ill give lessons. it does have alittle vib but i ordered the xt-1 tag bars there sil filled. and im in great shape so its not giving me arm pump. hit the gym lazy assses.

i havent rode the bike personally yet but im sure its way ahead of any of its predacessors in all aspects...wellminus price lol and judgin by what everyone is sayin about the engine being strong, i bet i will like it cause thats what everyone said about the 07 crf450s and i love how that power curve is...personally im glad they did that wiht the motor cause i thought the 07-09 line off the bottom in stock form sucked

how many of us here are going to require a air filter change to be under 2-3 mins flat not me, so if it take me 5 minutes, I can live with that, I have had mine now for about 22 hrs, and the missus is all ready spewing at me for spending too much time with it. ( mind you laying on it and giving it cuddles in front of her don't help lol..)

I get a little crazy  when I'm hungry and my blood sugar is low which may be similar to a low caffeine situation. The guy at the track riding his new 2010 sure didn't seem all tore up about any of these issues....In fact he had a smile across his face a mile wide :moon:.

After reading about these issues though I now realize his smile was some sort of facial paralysis :moon: cause it never seemed to dissipate and I'm just absolutely sure as the sun rises that he hated :worthy: that thing. Even though he got there before me and left after I did. Probably some sort of self hate punishment ritual he was enduring. :banghead:

I'm sure glad I don't have on of those darn P.O.S. 2010 YZ450's. :foul:?:foul:

Now I fully expected you GreyRacer to respond and you have some valid points...

I was kidnapped last weekend and threw a leg over it and spent about 20min X 2 sessions on a blue one last weekend...I could care a less what MXA says - but they were 95% dead on with my ride report after the first 20mins on it.

I thought the gear spacing was different than my 06 and any 07-09 I rode...it needs another tooth or 2 in back. Especially between 2nd and 3rd...in deep loam.

The EFI - issue for me is that the throttle is almost too sensitive in the first 1/4 of movement(I know ... where is the bog...nope thank god this is gone) it is just too sensitive as a slight twist from the beginning causes a almost too big a gain, it needs to be smoother like the last 3/4 turn offers, if this makes any since...this is great on the starting line this is hairy in tight corners or grabbing some throttle...

The vibration - I am spoiled I guess, the 06 is butter smooth compared to this....the 2010 vibration is not quite as noticeable as my 470 Bigbore but it is there...needs more counterbalancer I think.

I think 6 bolts and lifting the gas tank up to access the filter is overkill sorry.(this is the cluster I refer to) If you can do it in 3mins....you need to apply to JGR Racing...they need you. (Grey to your point it will stay cleaner...but seems there could be a better system to it)

POWERWISE, It just seemed to me that it was slightly starved for more air....like the old days when you would take the metal air filter cover off your 72 pontiac and flip it over for more air and you thought it got faster....Sorry only over 40yr olds will get this :banghead:(it did not feel underpowered it just felt clogged up to me)I assume this is why the Proteams are opening up air holes? A pipe would be my first purchase also to add a little more punch.

But in fairness here is what was stellar - the suspension is by far the best out of the box OEM I have ever felt.

The ability to lay it down to corner - it does carve a heck of a lot better, probably better than any other Yami 4smoker

, and the ergos were almost perfect while riding. The bike flies extremely well -probably better than any other ride I have ridden...

You actually could not feel the extra weight while riding...you can feel it trying to pick it up

another little complaint:

I do however absolutely hate the hole under the seat .... it does collect some dirt and just seems plain stupid to me why there is no cover over it on both sides..it looks hokey.

Now again I will say this....it is brand new..the hype is there and the dealers will bone you on hype...reality is this....when the hype is gone....do you want to be left knowing that the 8-9k bike you just had to be the first 10 in line to have is only worth 40-45%(being conservative -it will probably be more) after 12-18mos, and then worth even less as you approach 2yrs? Sorry not me....

I think the 2010 is a really unique and very very good bike. But IMHO Yami has some work to do on this bike to refine it....but like every first year attempt this is the case, just seems like this year there is more to address....thankgoodness a new bike is not on my list this year.

  1. OK, but that's an overall gearing issue, and not one of gearbox ratio spacing. The 2010 is geared a tooth higher than last year's (48 vs. 49)
  2. That could be curable by tinkering with the tuner some.
  3. I'm not sure how else one would set it up to be any better, given the location of the intake. But when I saw it done, it took no more than 3 minutes, I assure you.
  4. You know you did the air cleaner lid to get that big ol' Quadrajet intake roar that the snorkel took out! :banghead::foul::worthy:

I'll have to give you the rest of it for now.
