The breakaway cable that operates the trailer brakes in case of a loss of trailer is only operational if the battery in the little box on the trailer is charged correct?

Should this battery be receiving charge from the tow vehicle when you plug into your trailer lights?

sorry for the newbie question :(

Yes, but if its a small battery and not the full sized ones, there is a special "charger" that just regualtes it at a slower pace (trickle)

Most trucks charge the brake battery while it is connected to the truck. There is a circuit in the fuse box for this that is not connected to the lights. If the battery is dead, check the fuse in the circuit. The owners manual should show the location.
