Ok. Well my first car is this really cool '86 Regal. It has a newer Olds 307 crate motor from gm w. 57k on it, big 4bbl carb, auto on the column, Cragar SS wheels, etc. I kinda wanted something different, like a truck or a new-ish car, so I cl'd it. And I narrowed it down to three choices, or just keeping my car because in the spring if I still got it my dad and I are puttin a little work into it (interior, fixing body fillers, dual exhaust, etc.)

Posted Image

1. 1994 Chevy 3500 Dually (king cab, 112k miles)

2. 2001 Ram 1500 (ext. cab, long bed, 127k miles)

3. 2000 S10 X-treme (ext. cab, 5 spd., 120k miles)

And fyi I was leaning towards the 3500 just because if I wanted to I could turn right around and get 6k for it.

But any input would be appreciated.

Im a chevy guy but you dont want a dually as your daily driver unless its a loaded down farm truck.. from your pictures its clearly not going to be.. Plus i find "little" pickups pointless and uncomforrtable.. that leaves the dodge... i say go for that.. but you left out many details (motor, tranny, mods, condition etc..)

Yeah if I got the dually it would be clearly from a resale value standpoint. As far as the dodge goes, it's pretty clean, I think it's the 5.9 v8, it's got flowmasters, it's flat black, which could be good or not depending on how it was done, and the only thing wrong that I know of is that the grille is cracked.

Depends on what you want, daily driver? S-10
Hauler Dually, even if it's pulling a tiny trailer now, in the future, it can really haul, assuming it's a diesel. If it's a gasser... well it will still haul, but not as much or as well and it's gonna kill you on gas mileage, so just skip it if it's a gasser.
So then there's the dodge, which is the jack of all trades, it'll get better mileage than the dually, easier to park than the dually, less for insurance, but it won't haul as well.
But it will haul more than the S-10, but not as good gas mileage and probably similar insurance costs.

I'd trade what you've got for any of them and be very happy about it. As long as I had a grocery getter to cut down on the fuel costs. If not, I'd consider buying a beater import sedan in the near future.

If the Dually was worth $6k, they seller would be asking $6k. There's a reason why it hasn't sold at this lower price yet.....it's not worth more.

And parking a dually in the street will be a no-go.... some drunk idiot will probably crash in to it and wipe out a dually fender...:bonk:

dually as a DD, not. some people don't mind them, but they can be a challenge to get around parking lots in.

yeah I decided to just keep my car. I should also add that my dad "helped" me make that decision lol. Guess he didn't think it was such a hot idea after all :smirk:

Parking lots? Sheesh, I got a story for you. Parking along the street, watching in the mirror to make sure the tires didn't get curb rash, got plenty of space in front of me, next thing I know, WHACK! Mirror slams into the window. I hit it with a street sign.

At 17/18, I drove the old man's 30-series Silverado for about six months as a daily driver, all in all not bad, but requires some getting used to. You just kinda hope you don't take something out before you get used to how it turns and how wide it is. To make it better, his was a quad cab (forget what Chevy called it at the time) with a long bed, so it was like driving a stretched limo. A tall, mean, white, 6,000lb tare stretched limo.

R, your old man is probably right. You can always buy a universal hitch and a small trailer to haul your toys on.

the main reason I was iffy about any trade was because no one acknowledged the fact that the car only has 57 thousand miles, was a one-owner car when we bought it (some old dude whose wife drove it, but sadly passed away), and was only driven like 5k a year, average, for the last five years, waxed regularly, the wheels are greased in the winter to prevent the chrome from rusting, etc. There's just no way I'm trading for some beat as hell work truck with 200k+ on it just because it's a bit newer. Some dude literally offered me a 2000 f150 single cab work truck base model v6 POS with 200k on it that needed new tires, an alignment, and a windshield. And the inspection was up. When I said the mileage was too high he responded "dude...it's a 2000." haha.

Unfortunately, your car's low mileage isn't that much of a factor. If you check out the KBB/NADA guidelines, mileage doesn't account for as much as most people think it does.
A 1980 Mustang with 10 miles on the ODO and one with 100,000 miles on the ODO are going to be worth about the same amount. It's still 30 years old.
Likewise, mine with 300,000 miles on it and one that has 150,000 miles on it aren't going to be appreciatively different in value because it's still 20 years old.

Now, if you have two three or four year old vehicles, one with double the expected mileage (3 years X 15,000 miles = 45,000, so doubled is 90,000 miles) and another with 1/2 the expected mileage of 24,000 miles you'd see a huge difference in the value.
200K on a 10 year old vehicle isn't out of reason, a little high, but not insane.

well yeah I'm aware of that. That's why I stopped looking for trades. People are so obsessed with their "official pricing" that they find online that they get a sense of entitlement. Which, when they call me about their car, leads them to expect me to want to jump on their POS that needs a bunch of parts and has never been maintained, just because Kelly Blue Book told them that their car is worth 500 bucks more than mine. It's just not gonna happen.

This leads me to another topic:

What should I do to my car in the spring?

I had some ideas:

First off, the interior. The seats are at too much of an angle for my taste, I feel like I'm laying down when driving, and the headliner is sagging, so I was thinking of replacing the headliner first, maybe the carpets, getting 2 old black leather seats from a junkyard and a center console, then if I have the ambition, a black rear seat too (cuz mis-matched seat colors would look odd lol)

If I get all that stuff, my dad said that he'd put out the funds for stainless dual exhaust. The car already sounds really nice with just the stock single pipe, so that I'm not too worried about. What do you think?

No offense, but I'd drive it till the wheels fall off and be happy. It's a mid 80s Buick Regal.

dude it's my first car, and I'm glad to have it. It's better than an '89 civic, isn't it? I don't know why people on here hate my car, because a lot of people around here love it. Despite the fact that "it's a mid 80's regal", I'm just wondering what people would do first. At least I'm not the kd with the Contour and the leaf blower turbo xD

Exactly, it's your first car. Create some great memories with it. IMHO, putting money into it for looks is throwing away money, ditto for exhaust. Save the money or pay off debt if you have any, when you decide to upgrade to a better used car, you'll have a down payment if you have to finance or perhaps depending on how disciplined/motivated you are, you'll have cash in hand to buy your new wheels.

Good luck. (and I mean that in a non-offensive way, not negative at all).

I'm putting money into the interior lol. The way the interior is right now it's pathetic. Yes, it will look nice when I'm done, but it will be a worthwhile investment because it will make the car a lot more comfortable to drive. And give me cupholders

If you were a little older, you would understand where guys that are 30-ish are coming from.

Let me explain.....when we were in HS, the "cool" car to have was a Camaro or Mustang with a V8. But, not everyone could be "cool", but they tried.....and didn't achieve it.

If you couldn't come up with one of them, the next step down was the Regal/Gutlass, but most of them came with the 3.8L, so they were an underpowered pig. These cars couldn't do a one wheel burnout on an icy parking lot. Mostly, they were owned by pathetic trash losers whose only goal in life was to have a "cool" car.

Oddly enough, many of them wound up either red, gray or black primered and filled with enough bondo to supply China's toy manufacturing capability for a decade, with a hoopty-ed up stereo system that was never really installed all that well (wire nuts for connectors, radio flapping around in the hole, blown Radio Shack bass cannon going "BLAAAP" from the trunk, etc) parked in front of a single wide trailer with two car seats in the back.

Myself, I like a good clean Regal that isn't all hacked up (very hard to find), but it's gotta have a V8.

That would be my car. No bondo, straight body minus the stupid body fillers (driver's side front is cracked.) It has a cd player, but that's it. No stupid amps or subs or anything. I just want to fix up the interior lol.
