2010 YZ450F Weight Issue

Recommended Posts

Is it just me or does this thing weigh a ton! I was looking at getting a 2010 RMZ250, but this new yamaha looks really impressive. Im coming off of a 2006 RMZ450 right now and it only weighs 220 dry. The dry weight of the yamaha is 245 i think! Where is the extra 25 pounds come from and do you think the new center of gravity on it makes the extra weight not noticeable?

You need to read the available information about the yz. go to mxa, dirtbike, dirtrider, cyclenews, etc. there are many first impressions on this bike and more and more people are getting them everyday. One of the things that is almost universally mentioned is that the bike feels a lot lighter than it is when in motion. put simply it feels like it weighs 245 when you're lifting it on and off the stand but it feels much lighter when riding. if you are serious about buying this (or anything) you should learn as much about it as possible so you can make an informed decision. 245 lbs is the wet weight.

Thanks for the input guys, I have been serious researching this for the past few days and that number did seem staggering at first but when watching and reading reviews it seems like a non-issue. I have always ridding 250f and I have my first 450 right now and I notice the extra weight and I'm hoping if I buy this bike that wont happen anymore.

I was talking to one of people in 2010 YZ450F project here, and he assured me the motor, body and all non FI stuff is lighter than past models. But he said FI and Fuel pump was really heavy to make total weight more than 09. If that's for real, I don't know how CRF could be so much lighter than YZ.... but You really don't feel much weight riding, so I don't think you need to worry about it too much though.

You are comparing a dry weight with a wet weight. ( That is the wet weight for '10 YZ).

You don't feel the weight when you ride it. It actually feels a smidge lighter than an '09.

Add oil, water, and gas to the RM and you will probably end up around 240.

Yes, it weighs 7 lbs more than an '09, but don't judge the weight till you've ridden it.

Also, don't run out of gas on it, as my friend found out this week. It will not pop or backfire to give you any warning whatsoever - it will just quit!

Yeah, I had great time pushing my bike back to pit already. No warning, just dead. it will be scary over doubles.

You can kind of see how much fuel is in from side of the tank but only on very bottom. can't see any from the tank cap neither unless they are full. I'm used to filling up 1/2 a tank, but will make it full from now even with extra few lbs.

MXA just came out with their test on the bike. They said it is 5.2 lbs heavier than last years YZ450F, which I think was the lightest 450 last year. They also go on to say that the the first thing out of all the testers mouth's was "This thing feels light!" and they end with "this thing feels like a feather". So I think weight would not be an issue but one of the good things about this bike. But I have not ridden it yet, however I do trust MXA above the other mags.

The CRF is lighter due to a smaller frame and parts that are made as light as possible. MXA has had two or more side case covers crack. I don't think that it's as durable as the '08 was.

You going to get one Troutman?

Yeah I think so, the question is when. I just can't seem to pay MSRP for anything so I am going to wait until the price starts dropping some. Its about 10 degrees outside right now so that makes it easier to wait. I will be tracking the pricing and when I can get one for $500 - $700 below MSRP I will probably pull the trigger. But who knows when that will be, hopefully in the spring.

Anyone make a skid plate for it yet? It sure looks like it needs one. I'm going to start buying the accessories now since mine wont be here till March.
