Good to see, seem like solid bikes. Any pics.
All second hand bikes I get are pulled down and restored to like new condition, can't stand not knowing if I'm riding a time bomb. Plus it gives me a starting point for maintenance.

Previous owner said its got the 444cc kit in it, goes pretty strong. No need to look inside just yet, but will find out if thats true eventually.

I could be wrong but he might be talking about updating the body and plastics to first gen 450 stuff.

Maybe.
Is it worth it for a slightly sharper look to change subframe/airbox, tank and plastics. I do like the 03 tank and shrouds thou.

I had a 426 some years ago and still have an 04 and comparebly the 450 is easier to move around on as the seat is flatter. It might also centralize some of your mass I am not sure though. It definately looks better.

I like the looks of the '03 shrouds, looks like it would keep my knees out of that vent hole. Do '03 shrouds fit on an '01 tank?

No you will need a gastank, subframe, airbox, rear fender, shrouds, side panels. I am not sure what else is needed but those things for sure. I know there are threads where other members have done this so you could search one up and send the guy a PM to get a parts list.

Look in Common Threads.

i cant see why you have to change subframe and airbox and that if you only want to change the shrouds. it seems like youd only need to change the tank but i dunno.

Because to change the shrouds, you have to change the tank, which requires the 450 seat, which necessitates the 450 sub frame, which will not accept the old air box. And so on.
