01 YZ426F throttle cable issue. PLEASE HELP :(

Hey guys I am new to this site and just registerd. This is a very good site. First off I just gotta say I just bought a YZ426 (used). First time owning a 4-stroke dirt bike (always had a CR250). And the starting on this was a pain in the you know what!!! But this site helped me on getting the "DRILL" down. LOL. Any way I am having a few issues putting a new throttle cable on. I plumbed everything up and tighten everything down. But the throttle does not "SNAP BACK" it just stays in the open postion So I took the cables off of the throttle and pulled on one of the cables and it returns back. I also took the cables off of the wheel on the carb. And moved the wheel and it spins back. I just can't figure out what is going on. Could someone please please please help me out on figuring this out. Any insight and advice anything to point me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. I wanna be able to go riding this weekend. Thanks again for a great site:thumbsup:

Make sure the throttle tube and handlebar are clean and the throttle tube is not damaged, then lube 'em up good. Be sure that the throttle isn't so far in on the bar that the end of the grip is dragging on the end of the bar. Also be sure that the cables are properly routed and not pinched. Does it make any difference which way the bars are turned? If so, you are pinching the cable housing somewhere...

I cleaned the throttle tube as well as the throttle cable housing (a lot of gum). And it doesn't make any differnce if I have the bars turned. I did notice though... If I take the throttle tube off the handle bars and hook the cables up and the housing on to the tube and hold the housing without screwing it down and twist the tube and slowly open up the housing it will "snap back". I am just not understanding what is going on... Really frustrating because I am fairly mechanicly inclined but I can't figure it out to save my life... Have been tinckering with it for the last 2 days and not getting any where at all with it...

Make sure your cable is routed the correct way, the two cables also should be run side by side parallel, not twisted like a rope.

The throttle tube needs to be put on the bars so it does not bind - check the bars/tube for straightness, do not shove it on the bars too far either.

Try looking at the way you are putting the cable ends into the throttle tube.When I first tried to do it ,I was reversing them and I was having the same problem.The way that looked right to me was wrong.I wish I could explain it better,but this could be it.(by the way...all have sinned,only the grace of God(through His Son's death,in the place of yours and mine), makes us "innocent".WHOOOOOO!!!! 426's are awesome!! try tightening the housing screw down a liitle at a time evenly. Check to see that there is no gap on the housing at the top and bottom with the screws tight. If it binds when all the way tight, loosen the screw slightly until it frees up and check again too see what is causing it to bind. sounds like the housing is not seating correctly around the tube. Does it have barkbusters on it? Somtime if your tube is to close to the barkbuster the grip will rub causing it to bind.

You may have an aftermarket tube, which I have had trouble with binding in the past. Get a genuine Yamaha tube.

Also, if you follow the starting procedure EXACTLY, you will not have such a pain in the a$$. I have had five or more bikes from 1973 to 2000 models with manual decompression, and NEVER had any trouble starting any of them.

I just wanna post and say thanks for everyones help. Very much apperciated. I did figure out what was going on. The top cable on the the wheel of the carb was way to tight. I do have a question if someone could answer... Can you get ride of the dual cable setup and run a single cable on the throttle?? Thanks again

Leave the dual cable setup in place.

Yeah I am going to leave it in place. I am just not really understanding why there is a dual throttle setup on this bike. Just confused

So you can force the throttle closed if need be.

Been there, done that and scratched my head for a while. Finally worked out cables had no play in them and too tight. Do not get rid of the dual cable - you never know when you may have to shut it off in a hurry - better safe than sorry.

Yeah that is very true! I was just curious if this setup was basicly a safety setup or a prefrence setup. I was just baffled... I am leaving it on. Its there for a reason right?

I believe the large bore 4 strokes pull so much vaccum in the intake tract it causes stiction of the carb slide possibly enough to overcome the return spring if all the stars aligned at the wrong time. Unlikely but possible many have used a single cable safely but now that you understand how it was supposed to work you might as well leave it on.
