How do I know if the air box has been cut?

Recommended Posts

Just picked up an 06 WR450. It appears that the snorkel has been removed, if that is what was in the hole looking straight down at it. Without seeing a stock 06 airbox, I don't know if anything else needs to be cut out. Any pics of a stock airbox on an 06 before the cutting? Search didn't produce much.

Thanks

on the right hand side of the airbox - you can either take the left side off and take the air filter out and you will see the holes in the far side (if they are there) or there is a screw that holds on the other side panel and there will be either two holes in the side of the airbox, or two shapes that are the 'cut here' lines.

  • 2 weeks later...

I cut the right side out a week ago. Made a nice improvement on power and throttle response. I rode it in wet conditions and checked the box when I got home to see how dirty it got. Not a problem. The right side is protected pretty good by the side panel. I even cut out about 1/3 more than the two squares. Probably a 4"x6" hole. Runs great.

Still trying to figure out the earplug thing....

Why would I need earplugs to ride after opening up my airbox?????

Mine's not as new as yours, but my WR has no top half to the airbox to help it breathe. It makes it noisier. Maybe not by THAT much (likely a great deal of the noise comes from the yz timing and the aftermarket exhaust) but it DOES sound louder without it.

I agree. You can hear the whine of the motor more.

I only rode it around the house and down the street before I cut out the airbox, so I don't really have a "before" reference. I still have the stock exhaust, minus the restricted part, I didn't find it loud at all when I rode the trails last weekend. Nothing like the 450EXC I had a few years ago. That thing was very loud, even with the stock exhuast. Too loud. This WR is very quiet to me. Just how I want it.

Thanks.
