Race day finally came after tons of preperation, time and money, it was finally here! We were up at 4:15am getting everything loaded and headed out to our spot. There was a ton of traffic all through the city and all the way to KM 19 where we turned off and headed to the Arches. Got there and Quinn Cody was parked right across from us so we went over to hang out. He offered some oatmeal and I couldn't say no. Only was able to take down a few bites and ended up giving it to a dog that was tied to a post for what looked like all night. "the worst thing about mexico is how they treat their animals, it makes me sick" - Quinn Cody

Got to watch Robbie come through on the 1x bike followed by some other pros and Kendall Norman who had already made up a few seconds on him at that point. Then it was time to get ready to hop on the bike and do what I came to do. Bill yelled over the radio "I'M COMING!" so i got ready to get on and we made the change in just a few seconds and I was racing ... Finally.

There is nothing in the world like racing Baja. 100s of people every where on the course, cheering you on and taking pictures. We're in the middle of absolutely no where on the top of a mountain range at 7am and there are a few hundred people with camp fires wrapped in blankets watching you fly by.

Prerunning makes the biggest difference because I was able to fly over rises and around corners knowing that there was nothing to worry about, even though you're always ready for a trap of some sort or a spectator standing to close to the course.

But knowing where I was going made everything 100x better. there was a big rise at RM 50 or so with tons of people and I knew, even if they made a trap, I would land waaaay past it. Hit the rise at 60+ mph and flew more then 100 ft past all the spectators.

Got to the first Honda pit and they said the next 450 Pro was 20 seconds ahead so I charged as hard as I could through the huge wash. A helicopter started following me through the area and I was glad I'd been through there before otherwise I probably would have looked like a spode (even though I did) and was able to make several passes on Class 22 bikes that were in between us.

made it through the 60 miles in about an hour and ten minutes and handed it off to Stuart. We were running 11th Overall and 3rd in class when he left. I had a great run and from the sound of it so did the rest of the riders.

we loaded up and headed back to the hotel, got changed and went down to watch the trophy trucks start. that was very awesome. I've seen them finish but never start. All of us were in awe at how fast these guys went through the streets with hundreds of people just inches away.

Then we had some awesome tacos at Paco's Tacos right next to our hotel and headed back down the San Vicente at RM 530. Got there at 1:30 and had one hell of a wait on our hands. Parked next to the SCORE officials where they had a grill and were making 'GOAT' tacos. Had one and it was pretty darn good!

1x came through at 4:47pm with 12x coming through at 4:48pm so Honda already had the lead at that point on adjusted time as they started 3 minutes behind them. then it was a loooooong 45 minute wait until 18x came through and then another 30 minutes until 11x made it through.

We were hanging out with a Canadian Father and Son Duo who had come down just to spectate. They worked at a mission about an hour south of there and had never seen the Baja 1000 so they were hanging out and asking a ton of question about everything and his 4 year old son kept hopping on our spare bike. He helped flag Ryan down with a glow stick as well and was really stoked to get to hang out with us.

102x had a HUUUUUGE lead on us at this point, about 30 minutes, and then 400x and 100x were about a minute apart and 13 minutes ahead of Ryan who pulled in after being stuck behind the #8 pre-runner for the last 15 miles of a section he never got to pre-run.

When he came in we had to check the oil really quick and we were out in under 40 seconds then I was on the highway for 2 miles and was freezing my butt off. Once I turned my helmet light on I realized it was pointing way down. Its attached with Dual Lock tape so I tore it off and tried to put it back on while riding. I had to stop right when I got off the freeway and a ROVER came out of the darkness!!!

"Are you okay?" "yeah I'm fine" "where is everyone??" "I have no idea" "you're 9th overall" "SWEET!" and I was off. I was bent on catching the 100x so I rode like a bat out of hell all the way to the beach. hit the 1st straight rd. and saw a pit to my left and glanced over then all of a sudden there was a turn. I was hard on the brakes and slammed ito the burm and right on the other side was a huge cove with waves crashing on jagged rocks... VERY SCARY!!!

I just kept going all the way to highway at RM 600 where I got on the Radio "I'M COMING! I've really got to pee!!!" and Angie replied on the radio "JUST PISS YOURSELF" "I'm not gonna do it" "Just do it!" "how far ahead is 100x" "2 clicks" "NO HOW FAR AHEAD" "35 Seconds!" "I GONNA GET HIM!" I passed by them at the market in Santa Thomas where Ryan was suited up in case I had to get off and hit the trail.

I could see his dust and I knew my section, and it was just Gorman where I had grown up so I was more at home then anywhere! I got over the first mountain range and could see his light on the other side and kept catchin and catchin and then the unthinkable happened... HE STOPPED TO PEE!!! I couldn't believe it! I blazed past him and charged as hard as I could all the way to Nick Blais.

My helmet light died about 30 miles before I got off because we didn't completely charge one of the batteries, one of the ladies unplugged it to curl their hair... but that LED light put out more then enough light. I could see the team just ahead on the otherside of a huge ditch. I hit it going about 30 mph and launched nearly 15 ft. out of it and skidded into the pit where Nick hopped on and took it to the finish...

We stopped right next to the finish and a local promptly SLAMMED into the back of us! Nothing happened to the truck, but their car was completely destroyed! The windshield broke, the radiator was pouring water out, it was messed up. Everyone looked and I jumped out, vaulted over the barrier and ran up to the team!

We finished 2nd 450 PRO and 8th Overall and we were stoked!!! we went to Pacos Tacos, all had beers and tacos and papas and were out till 1:30 AM. Hit the hay like no other and got more sleep then we got the entire week. Woke up, walked around town, watched some trucks, bikes, quads, and buggies limp in then loaded up and headed home.

Stopped at our big breath out resturant in Puerto Nuevo called the the Rosamar and got a huge pile of Lobster Tails and Sean, our Road dog, bought an entire case of Mexican Cola for the ride home.

Posted Image

We raced to the border and made it across in under an hour!!! We didn't get rapped, we didn't get robbed, we didn't get held up... WE HAD A BLAST!!! We had tons of tacos, beers, Cokes. We rode a ton of miles, drove almost 700 miles, spent a hand full of cash, made a ton of good memories, made a ton of good friends, and had an experience you could never have anywhere else.

I would like to thank a TON of poeple! First Stuart Goggins for getting us down there! Nick Blais for prepping the Race Bike and getting it all set up and ready to go. Then my dad for coming and working his butt off with Bill Boyer to get the lights and wheels and everything ready for the race bike. My brother for coming down and ruling his sections along with all the other riders on our team for keeping the bike off the ground and going fast!

Then i'd like to thank Angie Ngo and Sean Prentice for being our Road Dogs and driving everywhere and getting up at the butt crack off dawn with only a few hours of sleep. The Lynch Family and Goggins family, Lance and all the other chase crew people we had following us (I'm not the best with names).

I'd also like to thank Quinn Cody, Kendall Norman and Scott Dunlevy for talkin with us and hanging out a bit. Chuck Miller for the hand shake and well wishes. Honda Pits for keeping us filled up.

DIRT DIGITS for all our stickers and helping us represent!

Cyclops Motorsports for helping keep me on the trail in the dark.

Oneal, 661, Bullet Proof Designs, FMF, Blais Racing, Mid Cities Honda, IMS and the rest of our sponsors!!!

THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO WAS KEEPING TRACK OF US AND WISHING US WELL!!!

Great job guys. We battled all day and it was great! Just want to do a little damage control though. We had an issue with one of the clips the holds the HID in that broke and the light fell out. Austin Miller, who was on the bike at the time was stopped to fix it. He had gotten down to Santo Thomas and it broke the clip on the highway and he turned around and rode a mile back to the Honda pit up the hill to get it fixed and lost allot of time. The tape they used didn't hold and it fell out again past Uruapan and he had to stop and fix it losing more time. This was the only issue we had all day except for a ditch that was dug by a backhoe in the dark about 10 miles from the finish that cartwheeled me hard before the pavement section at the finish. Maybe cracked a rib. I still have yet to see what it was but there were allot of locals near it waiting for something to happen so I may start a thread to see if anyone knows what it was.

Austin had mentioned that he had cleared that up with you guys at the finish so, unless you saw a stream of steam, try not to make us look that lame. Haha! Good job guys, you earned it.

I thought you guys were talking about the light having problems after that point... sorry about that.

it looked like he was pee-ing to me, and with me having to pee and joking about peeing it just seemed fitting.

you would lean the bike up against you the same way to fix the light to... but thats no where near as funny as if he had stopped to pee!!!

Dont think your guy was lame, we had a great battle all day. to bad 102x was so stacked or else we would have had the champioship! lost it by 1 point!!!

I'm not sure how I feel about that. Good strategy and good riders but Jim Oneil probably did more miles than they did.

Had allot of fun with you guys out there. We made time on each other all day in different spots and it was a blast. One of your guys passed me in the rocks before Borrego and was looki'n good. Then I got him back on the dry lake bed and waved as I went by at about 100 mph. I teased him about that at Morrelia. You guys hung with us untill San Matias and came in 1 1/2 mins behind. I was able to make a few more minutes in the Mikes loop and we though we had a good margin on you guys but had the light problem at the San Vincente area Honda pit and killed 4:13 dealing with it and taping it up plus a couple of stops to re-stick it. You guys got around us after Uruapan when he stopped again to fix it and we came in 4 or more minutes behind at Ojos. I got on and tried my best against Nick Blaise but got lost at around mile 660 and went 2.5 miles the wrong way and killed 6:07! There is no worse feeling! Although I heard quite a few teams did the exact same thing in the same spot. Went a few more miles and hit a ditch at the bottom of a hill that a backhoe had dug and cartwheeled it BAD. Cracked a rib but got up and got moving.
Overall...that's racing, and you guys did a hell of a job. Not bad for teams that did it with a reasonable amount of riders...

Strong race guys. Swapping dust with 100x all day was incredible. The decision to put Ryan back on at 490 was the major factor in the race. At Honda 10 (RM417), 100x and 103X pitted at the same time. I think Chris was on the 100x at that point. They pulled out of the pit 1:20 ahead of us. Chris picked up 11:40 on Boyer by RM490. Ryan and Erik pulled it in to a +7:00 by Honda 15. It was a hell of a race. Casas, Parker and team made it a race all day. Fun for me to chase this year. Being on the other end chasing sure makes it just as exciting (and I could drink beer the night before).

Congrats to the team and all respect to 100X guys!

I had a blast too! You guys sure pulled it in at the end. Good on ya. Maybe we can combine teams for the 250 and make it an 9 man team so we can compete with... nevermind...

I have a video of the RM 417 pit. I'll see if I can get it posted. It's HD and my laptop chokes on them but I'll try. (It's on the next post, if anyone can tell me how to embed the youtube screen instead of the link I would appreciate it. I can't remember how. - Chris Parker)

Here is the WMV version. I should have an HD version coming soon and I'll replace it. The quality of the converted one (This one) is just OK. 103X pulls up behind half way through the video.

they said we had our lights on in just over a minute! those LED's are awesome!!!

we were actually going to run a 3 LED set up with a frame mount but it was just too bulky for me and set way to far forward and ultimately it was my decision since I was running the largest part of the night section... and it worked out for the best.

Quick change and then outta there!!!

Great pit 100x.

Originally I had entered under my name and drew 104X, (Which is my favorite number because my father flew F104 Starfighters in the airforce and at one time he pulled Mach 2.25!)
Carlos Casas was on my team and was only 2 points behind his 3rd class 21 championship so I changed rider of record to his name in the hope that we could help him with that. (His name runs that number)
I felt that it would be good motivation for the team as a whole and we could all benefit individually from something in this race.
All of the riders on my team were stunning and I am very proud of them. Christian Serna did one hell of a job in some of the nastiest sections in that race and Austin Miller from Texas held his own as well. We had some small issues in the end that cost us but as soon as I get a couple of hours to myself I will do a race report.

I am curious on that frame mount. Is this something that you fabbed? or bought? Got any more pictures of that set-up?

Yeah pic's please!

PS: Great ride to all the 100 number bikes! They seemed to dominate the top ten!?!?! But seriously, what is that class for? It reminds me of the 4-strokes classes out there like BITD! What's the point?

in that top picture you can see the bracket through the hole where the light is supposed to be. most of the top guys run a frame mounted light system. it keeps the weight off the bars and on the frame of the bike. also when you get head shake the light stays straight.

the factory honda team actually gets the bracket welded at the factory before the head tube is bored out!

but I prefered the fork mount. that light was so light you couldn't even tell it was on there. and it kept the center of weight further back, the frame mounted lights were way up forward.

and class 21 is the 450 pro class (technically called the 250 pro class but that was from the 2-stroke era). class 22 is the Open pro class. in the past they all ran 650s in class 22. now they mostly run 450s but still have the option of the 650.

thanks for the pics LK!
