Hello to all. I am new on this forum, and although I do not have a bike yet, I hope to be pulling the trigger on one in a week or so. I have one question only here: I have decided that of all the 650 dual-sports, I want the Suzuki DR 650. I do have one concern though. Can this SCEM (Nikasil ??) plated cylinder be rebuilt down the road? The XR650L and KLR both use cast iron I believe. When I buy a bike or atv, I typically keep it for life. Just like my ATC250es Big red trike. Wouldn't trade it for any new quad. Seriously, I was concerned about being able to overbore, rebuild, overhaul, etc on the suzuki as is uses a nikasil bore coating. Can someone give me some information on this. Thanks.

There are specialists who do Nikasil repairs and its no big deal but can be expensive. Even if the cylinder has been scoured they can weld it back and replate it so dont worry to much.

On a properly maintained road-based bike (as opposed to a competition sled) it should pretty much last a lifetime. Seriously. As long as you don't cane it from cold, or toss away the air filter or jet the bike stupidly rich then don't worry about it. If the worst does eventually happen then a replate can be done. I don't know how much it costs in the USA... maybe $200?

Unless you damage the engine somehow the coating will likely last the life of the bike. It can also be replated

You would be better off posting in the DR specific forum by the way.

That's funny.
Your new to the forum so let me clue you in.
IT'S FREE!
When you post a question don't be in a hurry for an answer.
Lets say that the first 38 people gave you bogus info, and you took it as factual?
What good would this forum be?
All the people who replied to you gave you good info.
Not only can your cylinder be repaired and plated, it can also be sleeved.
If you want to beef it up you can get a 725cc big bore kit for it.

Be thankful, be respectful, and be patient.
