Ive got 200 miles on my new deezer sm. Heres my major issue with the bike.
The transmission is awful. While Im riding it, if I come to a stop like a stop sign whille Im downshifting there isnt much of a feel for the gears clicking. When I get to neutral the neutral light comes on and when I kick down or up it stays in neutral. I have to release the clutch about half way then pull it in again then it will either up shift or down shift. Sometimes when Im about to roll off a light and I down shift into first I dont feel anything but if I let the clutch out half way Ill feel it click into gear before I even move. It seems like theres too much play in the linkage or something but I dont know im not a mechanic. please help

When the bike is stationery (and this is truer for nearly all motorcycles) shifting some times does not work. The rear wheel often needs to be turning to enable proper gear engagement.

Normally, there is little 'feel' in shifts. Instead, a firm up or down on the lever is called for. 'Finding' neutral is an 'acquired taste'.

ive ridden motorcycles, mainly dirt bikes my whole life, and this thing just seems sloppy to me, maybe motocross clutches are tighter i dont know but its not crisp and doesnt engage properly, or at least how id like it to. the problem isnt findin neutral, once its in neutral it doesnt want to come out of neutral its weird man. once in neutral i have to completely let the clutch lever out, then pull it in again then it will engage another gear. this is really frustrating in traffic.

My S acts about the same way. It may also need to have a few more miles on it to get broken in. If you haven't changed the oil, filter and checked the oil screen you should do that. Sometimes new oil will make the shifting a little easier.

I do all my gear selecting while I'm still slowly rolling up to the stop. I never sit at a stop in neutral, I want to be ready to go instantly in case some body in a car or truck behind me isn't paying attention and I need to get out of the way. It's probably paranoia but it did save me once long ago on a different bike.

If you think it's not shifting right take it back to the dealer, let them check it out, at the least, you'll have a record of a trans/shifting problem with the dealer if it turns out to be a real problem later on. :banghead:

Change the oil now anyway, it's recommended here to do the first change within the 1st hundred miles, then 500, then 1000 or less there after.

Do yourself a favor and do an "oil" post search before you ask what kind of oil to use :busted:, there are 12 million post on that subject and some strong opinions, not a question for the faint hearted. :smirk:

Hope all turns out ok with your bike. I've had really good luck with the two I've had, the 04S is gone, still have my 07SM. Bought it new leftover end of last Nov. and have around 8500 miles on it with no problems and I'm not really expecting any. :ride:

Have you adjusted the cable?

+1 on this. With the first 200 miles on the bike, your cable maybe just stretched a bit.

I posted this same issue a few months back and was also frustrated with my 09 DRZ sm. I have the exact same issue. Most people suggested going to a 20w50 to help the issue along. I adjusted the clutch, no change. I do very regular oil changes usually at 500 mi or so, when the shifting gets notchy. I have noticed that the issue has just kind of gone away. I haven't done anything. As a matter of fact I forgot all about it until I read this thread, and I ride every couple of days. Maybe it just needed more miles on it. I Don't know. maybe just put up with it for a little while and see what happens. Actually, I did drop it at the track, maybe that fixed it.

No, I don' tthink it has a sloppy transmission.
The gears must be turning for the dogs to engage the slots. Slightly let out the clutch to spin the trans and pull the clutch in. It'll go right into gear.

Try loosing the clutch cable a little, this will crate slight drag on the clutch alowing the gears to engage. I have had friends with similarr problems and in some cases when taking off in first gear there was a delay in gear engagement as thou the trans was slpipping or had slop or excessive play. They had the cable too tight!

Nope nothing wrong with the transmission as designed, mostly is sloppy riding that causes perceived shifting issues.. poor choice of lubrication or loose shifter, damage from abusive rider or a fall, those all cause problems,, but mostly it’s just a rider that is inexperienced, and thinks he is not.

As suggested above.. Make sure the clutch is adjusted, change the oil with a quality product, check the shifter to insure it is tight on the shift shaft, understand that a motorcycle transmission is not designed to shaft well when the bike is at a standstill..
