I currently run Dunlop 606's frt. and rear on my DRZ400s and have been extremely impressed with their overall performance. However, I wish that the front was better in the loose stuff (sand/soft dirt). I've had several times lately where the front has instantly tucked under after catching the side of a rut in these type of conditions. Any suggestions on a tire that would work with my 606 rear, be better offroad, have the same good pavement manners and simialar longevity to my current 606?

Pirelli MT21, 90/90-21 is a favorite with the 606 (my current setup)... i also like the MT21 120/90-18 on the rear better than the 606 i currently have.

How does the longevity of the MT21 compare to the 606?

I like the Mt21's also. I get about 1,500 miles on the front and about a 1,000 on the rear before the wear indicators show. I think they have the best grip for a dot tire I have tried especially in the sand and clay they have out here in High Desert..

The easy answer to this question is...

You are going to give up street grip for offroad grip. (That's not open for debate)

The 606 has kind of a shallow knobby, and they are spaced close, (side to side) so yes... if you get a little aggressive, or you are on the edge of that tire... it's going to tuck, or slide.

The MT21 has a little more open spacing, and will bite a dirt corner better. BUT... that open spacing is going to start to slip if you like to take corners like a sumo on the street.

Just my 2 cents... take it for what it's worth.

I liked the MT21's better than the 606's, but I have to say that Pirelli XCMH's are miles better than either in the loose stuff.....and aren't that bad on the street. I've found that my front XCMH's last just a shade less than the 606's or MT21's, but I take the trade off for the way better traction.
