Who has done the biggest trip ?

My dad rode for 8000KMs over 2 weeks from Cape york to Sydney, Australia.

Im thinking about using a DRZ400 for an Alaska to Argentina trip. Can it be made comfortable enough?
Its been awhile since i owned one.

I have read of a few people doing some impressive trips with a drz 400s. It can be done but I don't think it is the right tool for the job unless you get a better seat. It also will depend on how you are traveling. If you are going above 65 mph (about 105 kph) most of the time it wont be much fun on the Z.

Anything can be done. But would you want to? Wrong tool for the job. Like trying to hammer with a screw driver, you can make it work, but why would you want to? Why beat yourself up, when you can enjoy the trip with a more compatiable tool. The DRZ is a great machine in a lot of ways. Certainly a fun play bike, but.......................:bonk:

This past weekend, I did about 1100 miles in 3 days. 2 years ago, I did 750 miles in 2 days, and back after a 4-day stay.

There are 2 devices that will make a DRZ seat quite comfortable, and raise you up a bit, which is great if you're tall.

First is the Sweetcheeks -- if you're handy with a sewing machine (or know someone who is), it's basically a nylon pouch that holds a 2 liter soda bottle on either side of the seat, effectively making it 3x as wide. And, you can 'tune' the seat comfort by putting less or more liquid in the bottles.

Second is the AirHawk saddle -- this thing is AWESOME!!! I never ride long distances without it.

IMHO, if you're going to do lots of highway miles, change the gearing to 15-39 or as close as possible -- it will really calm down the motor at highway speed. It may not pull redline, but who cares?

over on advrider dot com some guy and his wife did a trip to Namibia, the wife was on a DRZ with the factory seat. check out the ride reports.

Personally, I've only been on the bike for an hour or two at a time.

I rode 509 miles in one day on my stock seat...definitely paid the price for it. I did the trip in 12 hours and went over 3 mountain passes. I would be ok with 300 miles a day on a stock seat if I was on a multi day journey but more than that and I would get a decent seat...Corbin, Renazco, etc.

I have done a saddle sore 1000 on the bike as well as a ride from Oregon to the Arctic and halfway back again (crashed on the way home). I think the bike, with some mods for comfort is great for long trips. There are better bikes, but I do not own any of them. I ride what I have.

I've done a couple of 10 hr straight trips. Your ass is sore after the first 2 hours or so with the stock seat. I also found being quite a light person that I had some nasty vibration in the controls which numb'd my arms pretty good. Also anything past 130km/h and the wind had its way with me the the drz.

If I could afford another bike for trips I probably would still end up taking the drz, its so tossable a big cruiser would ruin the fun.

just my opinion tho.

The Z is way more fun. But after a 3 hour ride I feel like I need butt implants.

Thers always a lot of "if you go above 65mph" stuff that comes with these type of bikes. I rekon its as good as any single, even DR650s, dominators old XT600s are really only best at 65mph. The main problem with the DRZ I see is its only 5 speed and you need that smaller rear sprocket to smooth it out a bit at that speed and that makes any off road stuff harder.
If it had been the 6 speed style box like the DR350 I rekon it would have been pretty much perfect.

That's a pretty long ride for a DRZ. I did 650+ in one day, and a backrest, seat modification, and riding shorts made it doable. My sleeping bag was a great backrest, and I added 2 inches of memory foam to the seat. The gearing was 15/39, which was nice for the highway, but made life tough in stop and go traffic. A bigger gas tank would be a must, and even the Clarke 3.9 gallon tank was a bit too small for one long stretch in Wyoming, but I had a fuel bottle in my back-pack for an extra 20 miles or so.
I want to make another long trip like the one I did this last summer, but a few more upgrades would be nice, like a FCR carb, E exhaust, larger tank, wider foot pegs, tank panniers or hard bags, and deathwings or another more streetable tire. I think the tank bags would be the best upgrade for me because the wind kept pulling my knees away from the bike, so my hip abductors hurt like crazy after riding 5+ hours.
Other bikes might be a little more comfortable, like KLX 650, Vstrom, BMW 650 or f800gs. If you have $ to spend, a BMW HP2 or KTM 990 Adventure would be SUH-WEET! Anyway, I hope you get to do the trip!

The Mobius trip:

http://www.advrider....ad.php?t=344776

4 X (2200mi / 2 weeks) = 8800 miles in 8 weeks.

...and counting. We head into BC, Yukon, and Alaska next.

I believe Questor (DRZ) and MotoAdventuregal (DR350) have topped that, well over 10k last summer:

Bought my 400s new at end of june 2008 and two weeks ago it clicked over 25,000 kms . longest trip I did was 1375 kms over a 4 day weekend. One of those days was 675 kms.
So yes you can do long trips on the "z"
I should mention that there was close to 5 months of that time there was too much snow here to drive it
So its more like 25,000 kms over 12 months. This year I drove it from snow to snow.

I would consider renting a different bike. That's what I did two weeks ago to make the 5.5 hour ride to Yosemite. DRZ would have been painful.

Most I have done in one day is 650 miles but have 28,000 miles on my bike now and 24,000 of them are in a year and a half. Mine hits freeways to single track and it's an SM:thumbsup: The Corbin was a great investment for my rear

Do it!

The DRZ can handle it. The North America part is gonna suck if you plan on riding highways but anything but a cruiser or tourer is gonna suck on the highway. Stick to back roads and it'll be fine. THE KLR650 is the most popular bike for that trip but the DRZ can handle it too plus IMHO it's a better bike (better suspension, lighter weight, similar hp). DRZ will need bigger fuel tank and better seat that's all ya need.

You guys have me beat, my best is the White Rim Trail in Moab.....125 off road miles in about 4.5 hours. Butt issues weren't as bad as the arm pump!

Most in a trip...1400mi in 4 days. Longest day, around 360mi.
