haven't done the 3x3 mod yet, I was wondering if I could drill holes and put these in (of coarse with the same surface area as the 3x3 cut-out), I have seen someone's bike with the mesh screen holes drilled into the air box side panel, I like that look, maybe put 5 into the side panel and maybe 4 on top of the box, I just replaced my foam filter so I am ready for my next air box mod.

I am just looking for opinions as I have never seen any references to these.

by the way, they are from the Dual-Star website, not bad, $8.95 for a set of 6...thanks!

that was fast Eddie, I really haven't done the math yet, just wondering about these as an alternative

area of a 1" circle is 3.14 (pi)x radius (1/2") squared, match that to the 3" x 3" which is 9" squared...duh...am I smarter than a 5th grader?

what... somewhere between 10 to 12 vents? since it won't be exact, gonna throw off the jetting specs I guess...sorry I didn't really answer the question

um correct me if im wrong but the 3x3 would be 9 inches and each vent is 1inch so 9 vents..

Im interested too. What about these being spread out.. less air flow than the 3x3 hole even with the same area of opening

Well, you need to re-think the vents somewhat.

1) they have filter material, it is restrictive, so the actual flow rate must be determined.
2) A series of small holes each have laminar flow issues on the edges.

To use these, you'd need a flow bench to determine how many you'd need (I bet you'd need about 20) to get the flow the same as a 3X3 and have to clean them all the time to ensure no change in flow.

also to consider, the filter material in those plugs is relatively small so would clog up much quciker and effect the jetting

Why would you want, what are in effect pre-filters to main air filter?

The main filter does its job perfectly well without the need for extra filtering upstream

I have them on my bike it takes about 12 of them to work like the 3x3, I didn't have a flow bench but based on my jetting its about the same as the 3x3. I used them because I ride on mud, water, etc... There are several hole on the way into the woods that are really deep and change often. So if your on the way in and there is 6 inches of water on the way back it may be at the middle of your motor...

Keeping them clean is a pain in the ass because you have to remove the seat but its not that bad once you get used to it.

Not going to flow the same as a 3x3 hole. Look how little vent area there is in each one. Looks like less the 50% of each one is actually open.

On top of that the foam inside them will impede flow. Add to that they they look like they clog up quite easily...and that is a lot of foam filters to clean.

IMO...I don't think they would be a very good alternative at all.

People have been selling those little vents forever. I remember putting them in a 1981 PE400 that I was using for sportsman open class desert when I was 14. As metiond... they plugged up quick... so they came out after a few cleanings, and the side of the airbox got cut open.

I would say to save your money, and just do the 3x3 mod. Just my 2 cents... take it for what it's worth.

not to sound like a smart a** but isn't this making a simple free mod complicated

Why would you think there is less of a chance of water getting into your motor through all those little vents instead of through the 3X3?

Isn't 3.14 X 1' diameter (pi x d=area) =about 3" ea? so 3-4 of them would equal the same area opening.

Radius squared, not diameter.

Pi x diameter = circumference

Does not matter....because once you drop this plug into your 1" diameter hole...it's no longer a 1" diameter hole. It's got a very restrictive plug in it.

WOW, didn't think this would be such a big discussion, I thought these would make for a neater air box mod but again with all the great input I realize that this is probably not the way to go and for all of you I appreciate that.

I really think these are pretty cool but as most mentioned, they probably are somewhat restrictive and will require periodic cleaning, if anyone saw my other thread on my air cleaner issues you'll know I am not the fanatic with my air filter I should be...I AM NOW THOUGH!

Thanks for all the help and I ,like many others, am glad William1 is OK!
